Full Job Description

Overview
We are seeking an experienced, compassionate, and highly organized Registered Nurse to join our plastic surgery practice. This is a hands-on clinical position working directly alongside the plastic surgeon and clinical team throughout the patient's experience—from initial consultation and diagnostic procedures through surgery, recovery, and postoperative follow-up.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable working in a fast-paced private practice and will have excellent clinical judgment, attention to detail, patient communication skills, and the ability to anticipate the needs of the surgeon and patient.

Essential Responsibilities:

Patient Consultations & Clinical Care

Assist the physician with new patient consultations, examinations, and follow-up visits.
Obtain and document medical histories, medications, allergies, vital signs, and pertinent clinical information.
Prepare patients for examination and procedures.
Assist with photography, measurements, documentation, and other preoperative assessments as directed.
Provide patient education regarding proposed procedures, expectations, risks, preparation, and postoperative care.
Answer patient questions and communicate clinical information appropriately under the direction of the physician.
Coordinate preoperative testing, medical clearance, and other requirements.
Provide telephone and electronic clinical triage and follow-up as appropriate.

Procedures & Minor Surgery

Assist the physician with office-based procedures, including biopsies, excisions, wound care, injections, and other minor surgical procedures.
Prepare procedure rooms, instruments, medications, supplies, and equipment.
Maintain appropriate sterile/aseptic technique.
Assist with specimen handling, labeling, documentation, and submission to pathology.
Perform injections and other nursing procedures within the RN's scope of practice, competency, training, and physician delegation.
Provide wound care, dressing changes, suture/staple removal, and postoperative site management as directed.
Monitor patients during and following procedures and promptly recognize and communicate changes in patient condition.

Aesthetic Services

Assist the physician with aesthetic consultations and treatments.
Administer aesthetic injections or other treatments when appropriately trained, credentialed, and authorized.
Assist with Botox, dermal fillers, or other injectable treatments as directed by the physician and permitted by applicable law and practice protocols.
Educate patients regarding treatment expectations, aftercare, and potential complications.
Document treatments, products, lot numbers, injection sites, and other required clinical information.

Surgical Assistance

Prepare the patient, operating/procedure room, equipment, and supplies for surgery.
Assist the surgeon during surgical procedures as directed.
Function as a surgical assistant/circulator as appropriate to the practice setting, training, and credentials.
Maintain sterile technique and assist with surgical instruments and supplies.
Perform surgical counts and other required safety procedures.
Assist with patient positioning, surgical preparation, and postoperative transfer.
Monitor equipment and supplies and communicate needs to the clinical team.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe surgical environment.

Post-Anesthesia Recovery

Receive and monitor patients following surgical procedures.
Assess vital signs, level of consciousness, pain, nausea, airway, surgical sites, and overall recovery.
Monitor for signs of complications and promptly notify the physician or anesthesia provider of concerns.
Administer medications and treatments as ordered.
Provide postoperative wound and incision care.
Assist patients with mobilization and discharge preparation.
Provide detailed verbal and written postoperative instructions to patients and caregivers.
Confirm that discharge criteria are met according to practice protocols and applicable requirements.
Coordinate postoperative calls and follow-up appointments.
Recognize situations requiring escalation or emergency medical evaluation.

Patient Education & Follow-Up

Educate patients throughout the surgical and recovery process.
Reinforce physician instructions regarding medications, wound care, activity restrictions, and follow-up.
Serve as a consistent clinical point of contact for patients before and after procedures.
Respond to patient concerns professionally and compassionately.
Identify potential postoperative complications and promptly communicate concerns to the physician.
Help create an exceptional patient experience from consultation through recovery.

Clinical Documentation & Practice Support

Maintain accurate, timely, and complete medical records.
Document patient assessments, procedures, medications, injections, specimens, recovery assessments, and patient communications.
Maintain inventory of medications, surgical supplies, injectables, and clinical equipment.
Monitor expiration dates and ensure appropriate storage of medications and supplies.
Assist with maintaining compliance with OSHA, infection-control, HIPAA, state regulations, and applicable surgical/accreditation standards.
Participate in quality improvement and patient-safety initiatives.
Maintain competency in required clinical procedures and emergency protocols.
Assist other members of the clinical team as needed.

Qualifications:

Current, unrestricted Maryland Registered Nurse (RN) license.
Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
Current BLS certification; ACLS preferred depending on surgical/anesthesia responsibilities.
Previous experience in plastic surgery, ambulatory surgery, PACU/recovery, dermatology, aesthetics, OR nursing, or another procedural setting preferred.
Strong assessment and clinical judgment skills.
Comfortable working directly with a physician during procedures and surgery.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Strong attention to detail and ability to anticipate clinical needs.
Ability to work independently while functioning effectively as part of a small clinical team.
Proficiency with electronic medical records and clinical documentation.

Preferred Experience:

Plastic surgery or dermatology
Cosmetic or aesthetic medicine
Operating room/circulating nursing
PACU or ambulatory surgical recovery
Preoperative and postoperative nursing
Botox and dermal filler administration
Biopsies and minor surgical procedures
Wound care
IV placement and medication administration
Conscious/moderate sedation recovery
Surgical assisting
Patient photography and preoperative documentation

Physical & Professional Requirements:

Ability to stand and remain active for extended periods during surgical procedures.
Ability to assist with patient positioning and transfers when necessary.
Ability to maintain concentration and attention to detail in a surgical environment.
Professional appearance and demeanor appropriate for a private plastic surgery practice.
Commitment to patient privacy, confidentiality, safety, and exceptional patient care.
