Job Description
This Phlebotomist II role focuses on providing high-quality specimen collection and processing services in a fast-paced internal medicine and digestive health setting. You will perform venipunctures and other specimen collections for patients of all ages, ensure accurate labeling and handling of specimens, support laboratory workflows, and contribute to a safe, compliant, and patient-centered environment. The position also involves troubleshooting, participating in training activities, and recommending workflow improvements to enhance overall efficiency and service quality.
Responsibilities

Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles on patients of all ages in a courteous and professional manner.

Explain venipuncture, blood draw procedures, and other specimen collection processes, such as urine or fecal collection, clearly and respectfully to patients.

Collect and store specimens according to established procedures, ensuring proper handling for internal medicine and digestive health testing.

Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes accurately to ensure that each specimen corresponds to the correct order.

Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders, maintaining specimen integrity.

Verify all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against physician scripts to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.

Package specimens for transport, following protocols to maintain appropriate temperature and conditions during transit.

Store specimen samples at the required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes, following protocol-specific procedures.

Update patient information and documentation accurately in the system to support proper tracking and reporting of laboratory results.

Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory and regulatory standards.

Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct specimen collection, processing, and handling.

Answer telephone calls, respond to inquiries, and read laboratory results to callers when appropriate and in line with procedures.

Troubleshoot issues related to specimen collection, labeling, or processing and make recommendations to improve workflow.

Participate in training activities and assist in training others as needed to support team development and consistent practices.

Attend annual department trainings and remain current on policies, procedures, and best practices.

Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory requirements while performing daily duties.
Essential Skills

Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required by state regulations.

Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.

2+ years of phlebotomy experience working with patients of all ages.

Demonstrated proficiency in performing blood draws and venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles.

Hands-on experience with specimen processing, including labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and packaging specimens.

Strong attention to detail and accuracy in matching requisitions to specimen tubes and verifying test orders.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.

High school diploma or GED, with 2–4 years of overall experience in a related healthcare or laboratory role.

Ability to provide courteous, patient-focused customer service during specimen collection and interactions.

Reliability and punctuality, with a consistent record of timely attendance.

Work Environment
This role is based in an internal medicine and digestive health outpatient setting (IOP), where you will work with a steady flow of patients requiring phlebotomy and specimen collection services. The schedule is Monday through Friday, typically from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with some flexibility as needed to support patient and operational needs. The position is structured as a temp-to-perm opportunity, allowing you to demonstrate your skills and fit within the team before transitioning to a longer-term role. You will work with standard phlebotomy and laboratory equipment, including needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and computer systems for requisitions and result documentation. The environment emphasizes safety, adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations, and consistent participation in annual department trainings. Team members collaborate closely to maintain efficient workflows, accurate specimen handling, and a supportive, professional atmosphere for both patients and colleagues.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr.
