Full Job Description

Position Summary

The South Berkeley Fire District is currently accepting applications for a Part-Time Engineer. This position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of fire apparatus, emergency response activities, and supporting the district’s mission of protecting life and property.

Shift Schedule: Required to work at least 60 hours per month.

Compensation

Hourly rate is $13.11/hour.

Minimum Qualifications (Required at Time of Application)

IFSAC Firefighter II
Emergency Vehicle Driver Training (EVDT)
Basic Auto Extrication or equivalent
NIMS ICS 100, 200, 700, 800
Valid CPR / First Responder Certification (or equivalent)
Pump Operations I & II (or equivalent)
Building Construction Awareness (or equivalent)*
Fire Instructor I
Aerial Operations (must be obtained with one (1) year of employment)
Successful completion of Engineer Exam (given prior to being placed in the position)
Completed Engineer Task Book (completed post-hire)
Completed Probationary Firefighter Task Book (completed post-hire)
Successful completion of Probationary Exam (completed post-hire)
Successful completion of physical agility test (given at time of interview)
Building Construction Awareness is available through the National Fire Academy (NFA) website.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Operate and maintain fire engines and aerial apparatus
Perform pump and aerial operations at emergency scenes
Respond to fire, EMS, rescue, and related emergency incidents
Conduct apparatus checks, maintenance, and documentation
Participate in required training, drills, and continuing education
Maintain compliance with District policies, SOPs, and safety standards

The ideal candidate demonstrates strong mechanical aptitude, professionalism, leadership ability, and a commitment to training and public service. Engineers are expected to serve as role models in operational excellence and safety.
