DIRECTOR OF MARKETING

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Director of Marketing oversees the day-to-day operation of the Marketing team and supervises its employees. He/she assists the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) in setting strategic objectives for the department and the Director of Marketing coordinates and supervises all firm-wide marketing initiatives and manages the planning, implementation, and execution of those activities to achieve the goals and objectives of the department and the firm. The Director of Marketing coordinates marketing and client service efforts, utilizing proven internal and external management techniques; leads the development of branding strategies; assists practice, office, client and industry teams; and implements marketing projects.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
The Director of Marketing reports directly to the CMO and coordinates matters with other administrative directors and managers within the firm. The Director of Marketing collaborates closely with the firm’s Director of Business Development, Regional Marketing & Business Development Manager and Higher Education Practice Manager to ensure alignment of initiatives with firm objectives.
SUPERVISES: events, communications, analytics/technology, and creative staff.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Team Leadership
· Supervises and coordinates the development and implementation of the branding, marketing, digital marketing, advertising, events, communications, media and public relations strategies designed to achieve the firm’s strategic objectives.
· Leads and mentors the firm’s marketing team through collaboration, accountability and professional growth. Coordinates day-to-day activities with the marketing team, directs and supervises the efforts of other marketing personnel, and promotes positive interaction between all marketing team members and internal/external customers.
· Develops departmental policies and procedures to track return on investment, improve consistency and quality of the department’s work product; and expand the skills and abilities of the team members. Oversees resource allocation and project management across marketing functions.
· Oversees marketing technology and other platforms, processes, and data integrity.
· Develops the firm’s marketing budget and protocols to track budget expenditures; providing monthly reports as needed.
Brand Strategy
· Sets the strategic creative vision and visual standards for major firm initiatives in partnership with CMO, marketing communications team members, Business Development, and firm leadership.
· Develops and executes firmwide, practice and industry marketing strategies.
· Ensures consistency in the firm's visual identity, messaging, and positioning across all marketing channels.
· Works with the CMO and Director of Business Development in efforts related to strategic geographic, practice and industry expansion.
Events & Sponsorships
· Oversees the planning and execution of client seminars, special events, industry meetings, webinars, virtual meetings, exhibits, sponsorships, presentations, internal marketing events, internal firm events, or other ad hoc marketing activities.
· Coordinates with the CMO and Director of Business Development to evaluate, negotiate and manage sponsorships.
Communications & Digital Marketing
· Supervises corporate communications strategies facilitated through print materials, digital channels (including social media) and other appropriate communication methods with attorneys, clients and industry teams; monitors the production of marketing collateral and digital materials to ensure consistency; develops systems to maximize the use of all marketing content in print and on the web.
· Oversees the writing and dissemination of firm announcements/press releases, identifies strategic media placement opportunities, develops story pitches and works with CMO on related public relations needs.
· Oversees the firm’s marketing technology and analytics projects, including but not limited to email marketing systems, social media systems, ERM/CRM system, website and analytics programs.
· Supervises submissions to the firm’s marketing information databases, assuring quality control while overseeing the classification of data into usable categories.
Website & Technology
· Oversees the firm's external website strategy, user experience, content architecture, design standards, vendor relationships, website analytics, and ongoing enhancements.
· Leads website redesign initiatives and ensures digital assets support business development, recruiting, client service, and brand objectives.
· Identifies, evaluates, and implements marketing technology, automation, analytics, and workflow solutions to improve efficiency, scalability, and service delivery.
· Leads process improvement initiatives that enhance collaboration, reporting, project management, and operational effectiveness.
Analytics, Reporting & Measurement
· Develops and oversees reporting frameworks, analytics programs, performance metrics, ROI measurement processes, and executive-level reporting.
Vendor & Agency Management
· Manages relationships with external agencies, consultants, technology providers, freelancers, publishers, and marketing vendors.
· Negotiates contracts and evaluates vendor performance to maximize quality, service, and return on investment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required:
· Knowledge of marketing administration at a level normally acquired through completion of a bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business, or Communications, and related professional supervisory experience; MBA or advanced degree desirable.
· 10+ years progressively responsible work experience in the legal or other professional services organizations.
· Strong leadership and consensus-building skills, marketing management and strategic planning experience; a proven track record in developing and achieving marketing goals.
· Self-starter, highly organized and able to work well with staff, attorneys and clients at all levels.
· Exemplary presentation, interpersonal and business skills and a proven track record of team building.
· Ability to identify and analyze issues and problems in business development and marketing management, and to recommend and implement solutions.
· Strong experience and facility with technology, including Microsoft Office Suite, website, email marketing software, CRM/ERM software, intranet, databases, knowledge management tools, graphic design and layout software, presentation software, and social media channels.
· Work requires more than 40 hours per week to perform the duties of the position and may require some travel.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
PHYSICAL EFFORT:Manual dexterity used in operating standard office equipment. Prolonged periods of sitting. May be required to walk to various areas throughout the office building. This may require use of elevators and/or stairs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Normal office environment.
JOB STATUS: This is a full-time, exempt position. Work after hours or on weekends may be occasionally expected or required. Travel is expected.
The position is required to work in the office full-time, five days a week, Monday - Friday. The department’s policy on remote work is that team members are eligible for remote work on a hybrid schedule after 12 consecutive months of full-time employment. The hybrid schedule includes a maximum of 2 days per week of remote work where the two days selected must be consistent week to week. Approval of a hybrid work schedule is contingent upon work performance, direct supervisor review and approval in addition to the reviews/approvals outlined in the firm’s remote work policy.
Location: Position may be resident in one of Steptoe & Johnson’s West Virginia (Bridgeport, Charleston, Huntington, Martinsburg, Morgantown, Wheeling), Ohio (Columbus), Pennsylvania (Meadville, Southpointe, Pittsburgh) or Kentucky (Louisville, Lexington) offices.
