Full Job Description

The University Communications department is responsible for developing and executing communication strategies, messaging, and engagement efforts that are aligned with the University’s mission and vision. Within the division, departments such as strategic communications, strategic brand and digital engagement, executive communications, and creative services work together to ensure effective communication and engagement with internal and external audiences through traditional and emerging communication channels.

Primary Purpose of Position

The Social Media Content Specialist role is responsible for the execution of high-quality, engaging multimedia content for UNC Charlotte’s flagship social media channels operated by University Communications (UCOMM). In partnership with the broader social media team, this position brings content to life through hands-on technical production: capturing, editing, and delivering compelling video, photography, and graphic assets tailored for all social platforms (currently Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Facebook).

In addition to the execution of content, this role will also be responsible for contributing to social media content idea generation, activating on real-time content opportunities, strategically applying the Charlotte brand across all digital content, ensuring consistency among cross-channel content production, production coordination, and consultation on social media content production best practices.

Summary of Position Responsibilities

In collaboration with the University Social Media Team, the Social Media Content Specialist will be responsible for all aspects of content creation for all social media channels operated by UCOMM.

Social Media Video Production: Execute end-to-end video creation (planning, filming, editing, color grading, captioning, etc.) for flagship channels, executing both highly polished planned content and trend-based, quick-turn content.
Photography & Visual Design Execution: Capture high-quality photo assets for social channels in both staged and organic settings; produce clean, brand-aligned graphics, overlays, and templates to support social campaigns.
Real-Time Event Capture & Quick-Turn Delivery: Attend campus events, traditions, and live opportunities to capture and deliver same-day or next-day photo and video content that highlights campus culture and student life.
Shoot Logistics & Talent Coordination: Coordinate production details with featured subjects (students, faculty, leadership, alumni), including securing shoot locations, setting up camera/audio gear, providing script/attire guidance, and managing on-set flow.
Equipment & Digital Asset Management: Maintain departmental social media production gear (cleaning, charging, logging, and booking); organize and archive raw and finished video/photo files using established naming conventions and digital asset management systems.
Visual Identity Application: Apply Charlotte Social’s visual editing identity across all produced media, maintaining set standards for color grading, typography, closed captioning, and brand
presentation.
Creative Collaboration & Concept Pitching: Partner with social media managers to review asset performance, test new visual content styles, and pitch creative video and photo concepts for
upcoming university initiatives.

Other Work Responsibilities

Perform administrative tasks related to equipment maintenance, software updates, or specialized production needs as assigned.
Assist in guiding student workers, interns, or peer contributors on camera operation, audio setup, and basic video editing workflows.
Participate in department-wide meetings, team creative sessions, and relevant professional development opportunities.
Provide backup technical support for broader UCOMM live streaming, emergency communications, or university-wide media capture during major campus events.

Minimum Education/Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Marketing, Digital Media Production, Film/Video Production, or a related field; or
An equivalent combination of education and professional visual production experience.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

2–4 years of experience producing short-form video, photography, and social graphics for a brand, agency, or higher education institution.
Demonstrated portfolio showcasing strong technical execution in video production (shooting, editing, motion graphics) and photography specifically formatted for mobile-first social media platforms. Strong organizational skills for managing technical equipment, organizing raw media files, and directing featured subjects during fast-paced campus shoots.
Hands-on experience operating mirrorless/DSLR cameras, mobile video rigs, lavalier/shotgun microphones, portable lighting setups, and handheld gimbals.
Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud (specifically Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, Lightroom, and Illustrator (or CapCut Pro/DaVinci Resolve).
Photography & Design Execution: Strong photography skills (framing, lighting, retouching) and solid graphic design fundamentals (layout, typography, visual hierarchy) optimized for social feeds.
Familiarity with technical specs, mobile aspect ratios (9:16, 1:1, 16:9), closed captioning tools, and audio trends across Instagram Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, LinkedIn, and Facebook.

While the hiring committee would love to see content that applicants have developed, it’s also incredibly informative to show social media-specific examples (vs. just the media that accompanied the social media approach). Screenshots of social media an applicant has executed are desired for filling this role.
Because social media can be so collaborative, the hiring committee would love to understand what the applicant directly contributed to when reviewing the work in their portfolio (i.e., the applicant may have developed the social media approach and copy, but sourced photos elsewhere). This allows us to understand the depth of an applicant’s body of work.
