About Plat Du Jour (PDJ)

Plat Du Jour (PDJ) is a precision meal platform built at the intersection of culinary excellence and operational discipline. As an early-stage, high-growth food manufacturing startup, PDJ is building the operational infrastructure that will support the next phase of scale. In a startup environment, that requires team members who are highly adaptable, resourceful, and comfortable wearing multiple hats. This role is designed to serve as the administrative backbone of the business — supporting day-to-day operations across people, payroll, finance, and internal administration while helping build the structure, systems, and processes that keep the company running efficiently.

Position Summary

The Procurement and Purchasing Manager is responsible for sourcing, negotiating, and purchasing the food products, ingredients, packaging, and supplies that Plat du Jour (PDJ) relies on to deliver consistent quality and value to its customers. This role builds and maintains strong supplier relationships, manages weekly purchasing, and ensures that procurement practices align with PDJ's quality, food safety, and cost-efficiency standards.

The Procurement and Purchasing Manager works cross-functionally with the CEO, Kitchen, Production, Shipping and Fulfillment, and Finance to keep PDJ's supply chain reliable, compliant, and competitively priced.

Key Responsibilities

Source, evaluate, and select suppliers and vendors for food products, ingredients, packaging materials, and operational supplies.
Negotiate pricing, payment terms, and contracts with suppliers to secure favorable terms while maintaining quality and reliability standards.
Develop and manage purchasing budgets, tracking spend against forecasts and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
Monitor inventory levels in coordination with Kitchen, Production and Fulfillment teams to ensure adequate stock without overordering or creating excess waste.
Establish and maintain purchasing policies, procedures, and approval workflows, including purchase order (PO) processes.
Track supplier performance against quality, delivery, and pricing benchmarks; resolve vendor performance issues as they arise.
Maintain accurate procurement records, vendor contracts, and certificates of insurance/compliance documentation.
Stay current on market pricing trends, ingredient availability, and supply chain risks that could impact cost or continuity of supply.
Collaborate with Production and Culinary teams to source ingredients that meet recipe, quality, and seasonal specifications.
Ensure all sourced food products and suppliers meet applicable food safety, traceability, and regulatory requirements.
Identify and develop relationships with backup/secondary suppliers to mitigate supply chain disruption risk.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
3+ years of experience in procurement, purchasing, or supply chain management, ideally with direct vendor negotiation responsibility.
Strong negotiation, analytical, and vendor relationship management skills.
Proficiency with procurement or inventory management software, as well as Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace (Excel/Sheets proficiency required).
Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple vendor relationships and purchasing cycles simultaneously.
Certified Purchasing Manager (CPM) or Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM) credential is a plus, but not required.

Food Service Industry Experience

Prior experience purchasing for a food production facility, a restaurant, catering company, or food and beverage distributor is a must.
Working knowledge of food safety and traceability requirements relevant to ingredient sourcing, such as HACCP principles, supplier food safety audits, or allergen control programs.
Familiarity with seasonal ingredient availability, perishable goods sourcing, and the unique lead-time and shelf-life considerations of food procurement.
Experience managing relationships with food and beverage distributors, specialty ingredient suppliers, or local/regional food producers is a strong plus.

Physical Requirements

Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 lbs. (e.g., product samples, supply deliveries).
Ability to sit or stand for extended periods while working at a desk/computer for data entry, reporting, and supplier communication.
Occasional travel to supplier facilities, food shows, or production sites as needed.

Work Environment

This role is based primarily in an office setting at PDJ's facility, with regular collaboration alongside Production and warehouse teams. The position may occasionally require visits to supplier or vendor sites, and availability outside standard business hours may be needed to manage urgent procurement issues or supply disruptions.

Compensation & Market Benchmarking Note

The pay range listed above reflects PDJ's good-faith estimate based on current market data for comparable roles within the food service and hospitality industry, adjusted for the Charlotte, NC metro area. Final offer will be commensurate with the selected candidate's experience, qualifications, and internal equity considerations.
