Asbestos Abatement Department Manager

Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Asbestos Abatement Division Manager / Senior Supervisor to help launch and grow a new in-house asbestos abatement division within an established restoration company.
This will be the first key hire for the division and an opportunity to help build the operation from the ground up.
The ideal candidate combines strong field experience with leadership and operational skills. During the startup phase, this person will be actively involved in supervising abatement projects while also helping establish the systems, equipment, compliance procedures, staffing, estimating standards, and processes necessary to develop a profitable abatement division.
As the division grows, the position will transition toward full operational leadership, including managing crews, estimating projects, monitoring profitability, developing employees, and overseeing overall division performance.
Key Responsibilities
Division Startup & Development
- Assist leadership in launching the company's asbestos abatement operation.
- Help develop division SOPs, safety procedures, documentation standards, and project workflows.
- Identify required equipment, PPE, negative-air equipment, decontamination equipment, tools, consumables, and vehicles.
- Establish equipment maintenance and inspection procedures.
- Assist with state licensing, permitting, notifications, and regulatory compliance.
- Develop relationships with environmental consultants, laboratories, air-monitoring firms, waste transporters, and approved disposal facilities.
- Help establish estimating and production standards for abatement projects.
- Assist management with recruiting and developing the initial abatement workforce.
Project Management & Field Supervision
- Supervise asbestos abatement projects from mobilization through completion.
- Review asbestos surveys, project specifications, and scopes of work.
- Develop site-specific work plans and containment strategies.
- Coordinate project scheduling, labor, equipment, materials, and disposal.
- Ensure proper construction of containments and regulated work areas.
- Verify negative-pressure requirements and engineering controls.
- Manage worker entry/exit procedures and decontamination.
- Ensure proper handling, packaging, labeling, transportation, and disposal of asbestos-containing materials.
- Maintain accurate daily project documentation.
- Coordinate required air monitoring and final clearance activities with third-party consultants.
- Communicate project progress and issues with restoration project managers, customers, consultants, and company leadership.
Safety & Regulatory Compliance
Maintain strict compliance with applicable:
- OSHA asbestos regulations
- EPA/NESHAP requirements
- North Carolina asbestos regulations
- South Carolina asbestos regulations when applicable
- Company respiratory protection program
- Medical surveillance requirements
- Worker training requirements
- Hazard communication requirements
Ensure all employees maintain required training, medical clearance, respirator fit testing, and state accreditation/licensing.
Conduct jobsite safety meetings and enforce company safety procedures.
Immediately identify and correct unsafe or non-compliant work practices.
Estimating & Financial Performance
- Perform site visits and assist with estimating asbestos abatement projects.
- Develop accurate labor, equipment, material, disposal, and subcontractor budgets.
- Establish realistic production rates for common abatement activities.
- Review actual job costs against estimates.
- Monitor labor productivity and crew utilization.
- Identify opportunities to improve project gross margins.
- Work with leadership to establish pricing standards and minimum project charges.
- Assist with forecasting division revenue and staffing requirements.
Team Leadership
- Recruit, train, and develop asbestos abatement workers and supervisors.
- Establish clear performance expectations for field personnel.
- Conduct regular safety and technical training.
- Develop workers into future crew leaders and supervisors.
- Manage employee scheduling and crew assignments.
- Maintain a professional, accountable, safety-first culture.
Required Qualifications
- Significant hands-on asbestos abatement experience.
- Current or previously held asbestos supervisor accreditation/license for NC and/or SC.
- Strong understanding of asbestos containment, negative-pressure systems, decontamination, respiratory protection, PPE, HEPA filtration, and regulated waste handling.
- Knowledge of OSHA asbestos requirements and applicable EPA regulations.
- Experience supervising asbestos abatement crews.
- Ability to read asbestos surveys and project specifications.
- Strong jobsite documentation skills.
- Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
- Ability to pass required medical surveillance and respirator clearance.
- Ability to work in PPE and regulated environments.
- Ability to occasionally work evenings, weekends, or emergency schedules when projects require it.
Strongly Preferred
- 5+ years of asbestos abatement experience.
- 2+ years supervising asbestos abatement projects.
- Current North Carolina asbestos supervisor accreditation.
- South Carolina asbestos supervisor license or ability to obtain one.
- Experience working for an environmental, restoration, demolition, or specialty contracting company.
- Experience estimating asbestos abatement projects.
- Experience managing job costing and project gross margins.
- Experience building or growing an abatement operation.
- Existing relationships with environmental consultants and industry vendors in North Carolina or South Carolina.
What Success Looks Like
First 90 Days
The Division Manager will work with company leadership to:
- Complete required company licensing and compliance setup.
- Establish written operating and safety procedures.
- Finalize equipment and supply requirements.
- Establish waste transportation and disposal procedures.
- Establish environmental consultant and laboratory relationships.
- Develop estimating templates and pricing standards.
- Recruit the initial abatement crew.
- Prepare the division to begin safely performing projects.
Months 3–6
- Begin successfully completing in-house abatement projects.
- Maintain excellent regulatory and safety compliance.
- Establish reliable production rates.
- Track job-level revenue, labor, materials, disposal costs, and gross profit.
- Develop a dependable field crew.
- Build relationships with internal mitigation and reconstruction teams.
- Reduce reliance on outside abatement subcontractors.
Months 6–12
- Develop the division into a consistent and profitable operation.
- Maintain strong crew utilization.
- Train additional supervisors and crew leaders.
- Increase the number and size of projects the division can perform.
- Establish predictable monthly revenue and gross-margin performance.
- Prepare the operation to support multiple abatement crews.
Compensation
Base Salary: $75,000–$90,000 annually, depending on experience and existing licenses/accreditations.

Potential Year-One Total Compensation: Approximately $85,000–$105,000+, depending on division performance.
