Special Education Coordinator

Harrisburg Global Academy (K–8 Charter School)
Reports To: Principal

Position Summary

The Special Education Coordinator provides leadership, oversight, and compliance management for all special education services at Harrisburg Global Academy. This position ensures that students with disabilities receive a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) regulations, and all applicable federal and state laws. The Coordinator supports student achievement through effective program implementation, staff coaching, collaboration with families, and oversight of special education processes and documentation.

Essential ResponsibilitiesProgram Leadership & Compliance

Ensure compliance with IDEA, Section 504, South Carolina State Board of Education regulations, and SCDE special education policies and procedures.
Oversee child find, referral, evaluation, eligibility, reevaluation, IEP development, service delivery, and manifestation determination processes.
Maintain accurate and compliant special education records and reporting requirements.
Monitor timelines and procedural safeguards to ensure full compliance with state and federal regulations.
Serve as the school's primary liaison with the authorizer, SCDE, and contracted service providers regarding special education matters.

IEP & Student Services Oversight

Facilitate and coordinate IEP meetings and eligibility determinations.
Ensure IEPs are implemented with fidelity and that accommodations, modifications, and related services are provided as required.
Monitor student progress toward IEP goals and support data-driven instructional decision-making.
Coordinate services for students receiving speech-language, occupational therapy, physical therapy, counseling, and other related services.

Staff Support & Collaboration

Provide training and coaching to general education and special education staff regarding inclusive practices, accommodations, behavior supports, and legal compliance.
Collaborate with teachers to ensure access to grade-level curriculum within the school's workshop model and instructional framework.
Support implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), behavior intervention plans, and MTSS processes.
Assist administrators in addressing student needs, disciplinary issues involving students with disabilities, and manifestation determinations.

Family Engagement

Build positive relationships with families and serve as a resource regarding special education rights, procedures, and services.
Ensure meaningful parent participation in all aspects of the special education process.
Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress, services, and support needs.

Qualifications

Valid South Carolina Special Education teaching certification required.
South Carolina certification in Educational Administration or related leadership credential preferred.
Minimum of three years successful experience in special education.
Demonstrated knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, FERPA, South Carolina special education regulations, and MTSS frameworks.
Strong organizational, communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
Experience leading IEP teams and coordinating special education compliance preferred.

Performance Expectations

The Special Education Coordinator will:

Maintain 100% compliance with applicable federal and state special education timelines and requirements.
Ensure students with disabilities receive appropriate services and supports aligned with their IEPs.
Foster collaborative partnerships among families, teachers, service providers, and school leadership.
Support the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional success of students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment (LRE).

Pay: $55,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
