Purpose
This part-time position supports and enhances the music and worship ministry of Philadelphia United Methodist Church by providing skilled piano and organ accompaniment for worship services, rehearsals, and special services. The Pianist/Organist works collaboratively with the Director of Music Ministries, the Senior Pastor, and other volunteers to cultivate meaningful worship through music. The primary responsibility of this role is to accompany the church’s adult music groups, including the Chancel Choir, with secondary responsibilities including accompaniment for the Children’s Choir and other developing music ministries as needed. The ideal candidate demonstrates comfort working with individuals across a wide range of ages and musical abilities and supports the overall vision and mission of the church through excellence in musical leadership.
Responsibilities
· Provide vocal warm-up and choral anthem accompaniment for the Chancel Choir during weekly rehearsals and all performances within worship services. This may include, but is not limited to, rehearsal and performance accompaniment for seasonal cantatas and special services that occur as a result of Advent, Christmas, Holy Week, and Easter.
· At the description of the Director of Music Ministry, provide organ and/or piano accompaniment for Sunday worship services including hymns, preludes, postludes, doxology, and special music or solos.
· Serve as accompanist for adult and children’s music ensembles of the church, supporting rehearsals and performances as coordinated with the Director of Music Ministry and volunteers with musical leadership responsibilities.
· Occasionally provide music for weddings, funerals, and other special services throughout the year, as availability allows.
· Work collaboratively with the Director of Music Ministry and pastoral staff to ensure that music enhances the worship experience and supports the spiritual life of the congregation.
· Maintain work areas, instruments, and music materials in an organized and presentable condition. Report any issues with the organ or piano to the Director of Music Ministry and/or the Senior Pastor.
· Arrange for qualified substitutes when unable to fulfill scheduled responsibilities, in partnership and support of the Director of Music Ministry.
· Be a strong team player with a commitment to supporting the worship life of the church with excellence, professionalism, and flexibility.
Time Commitment
The musical responsibilities associated with this position are expected to require approximately 10–12 hours per week, including:
- Weekly choir rehearsals
- Sunday worship services
- Music preparation and personal practice
- Occasional additional rehearsals, seasonal services, and unexpected services that support the ministry of the church (funerals, prayer vigils, celebrations)
Qualifications
- While there are no specific educational requirements, experience and proficiency in piano and/or organ performance and choral accompaniment is required. The accompanist should be able to support the musical level and repertoire of each musical group that they are accompanying.
- A collaborative, positive, creative, and energetic spirit with a strong work ethic.
- A passion for musical worship and devotion to God, with the ability to work across a variety of musical styles including traditional, sacred, choral, and contemporary music.
- Experience working with both adults and children in a musical setting.
- Knowledge of the United Methodist liturgical calendar is preferred but not required.
