The University of Virginia’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), a unit within the Department of Student Health and Wellness, is seeking to hire a full-time mental health professional for the position of Staff Psychotherapist – Embedded in the McIntire School of Commerce. The Staff Psychotherapist – Embedded in the McIntire School of Commerce is a staff member of CAPS and provides mental health services to McIntire students in UVA’s bachelor and graduate programs.
Embedded Psychotherapist:
The Embedded Psychotherapist is a licensed mental health professional who provides accessible, culturally responsive, and context-informed mental health services within a designated school, academic department, or student community at the university. By working directly within the setting where students live, learn, and engage, the Embedded Psychotherapist increases access to mental health support, strengthens relationships with faculty and staff, and enhances the community’s overall capacity to support student well-being.
The role integrates clinical service delivery, consultation, outreach, and systems-level collaboration. Although embedded in a specific context, the therapist remains an active member of the university’s central Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) team and participates in center-wide functions, quality standards, and initiatives.
This Embedded Psychotherapist will be located full-time at the McIntire School of Commerce. Responsibilities include:

Provide triage, intake assessments, brief individual psychotherapy and clinical consultation.

Coordinate care with CAPS psychiatric providers as well as facilitate referrals to psychological and psychiatric services in the community.

Collaborate with McIntire faculty, staff and administrators to provide outreach and consultation regarding student mental health needs.

Provide outreach to the UVA community

This position may at times engage in supervision and didactic seminars to trainees in CAPS’ APA-accredited doctoral internship in Health Service Psychology.

Participate in treatment teams, staff meetings, departmental committees, and special projects as requested

Maintain ethical and timely documentation of all clinical work in the electronic medical record system

Perform all duties in accordance with the SHW Clinical Staff Bylaws, policies, and procedures

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Masters Degree Required
-
Experience: 3 years of postgraduate experience in counseling

Licensure: Valid License as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in the Commonwealth of Virginia or license eligible. Must be licensed within 6 months of hire

Knowledge and competency in culturally informed therapeutic approaches
-
Experience with brief models of psychotherapy

Crisis management skills, including experience with risk assessment, safety planning and facilitating transfers to a higher level of care
-
Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team.
Preferred Qualifications:

Education: Doctorate in Clinical or Counseling Psychology

Experience:
-
3 years of experience providing individual psychotherapy to adolescents or adults
-
1 year experience with risk assessment and crisis intervention
-
Experience coordinating care with psychiatrists and/or other medical professionals
-
Licensure: Valid License as a Clinical Psychologist in the Commonwealth of Virginia
-
Working on a college or university campus including as a psychotherapist
-
Providing outreach, including experience developing presentations and speaking to diverse audiences
-
Leading psychotherapy groups
-
Supervising therapists-in-training
-
Providing mental health support to individuals in the commerce professions.
About the Position

This is primarily a sedentary role involving extensive use of desktop computers. Occasional travel may be required to attend meetings or programs.
The salary range for this position is $ $80,000- $100,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience.
