Reports To: E-911 Shift Supervisor
Summary of Position: Performs difficult technical work dispatching law enforcement, fire, and EMS and other equipment and personnel usually in response to emergency situations; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the E-911 Shift Supervisor.

Receives, classifies, processes and dispatching emergency service calls; supervises all aspects of communications operations; receiving, recording and forwarding non-emergency service calls; preparing and maintaining computerized and other records and files;

Operates radios, telecommunications equipment, recording devices, computer terminals and records procedures;

Receives law enforcement, fire and EMS and related service request and calls; Dispatches emergency equipment and personnel where and when needed;

Receives and forwards service request, complaints and other calls for County departments; receives and transmits messages by radio and maintains radio log;

Operates tele-computer terminals on VCIN/NCIC Networks; prepares and maintains public safety computer records; types and files reports and records;

Operates a Computer-Aided Dispatch System;

Performs Emergency Medical, Emergency Fire, Emergency Police, Pre-arrival instructions related to E-911 Calls for Service. (Certification Required at all times);

Operates a telephone device for the hearing impaired;

May be assigned to work varying shifts and flexible schedules;

Monitors all communications center equipment and its performance to ensure efficient operations on a daily basis;

Required Knowledge and Skills: Extensive knowledge of the methods of operating the communications system; extensive knowledge of radio and teletype procedures; extensive knowledge of the geography of the County and location of important buildings; ability to type at a reasonable rate of speed, solve problems within scope of responsibility, deal courteously with the public under stressful conditions. Must be able to accurately type 30-45 WPM.
Education and Experience: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
Certifications and licenses: Possession of or ability to acquire a valid Virginia Division of Criminal Justice Services Telecommunicators Certificate and VCIN/NCIC Operators Certificate. Possession of or ability to acquire valid Priority Dispatch Certifications in the disciplines of Emergency Medical Dispatch, Emergency Fire Dispatch, Emergency Police Dispatch.
Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements: This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires repetitive motions and occasionally requires reaching with hands and arms; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
