Position Summary
The Field Technician Apprentice supports the inspection, testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of electrical power systems at customer sites while continuing to develop technical skills under the guidance of experienced technicians. This role builds on foundational electrical knowledge and hands-on field experience to support electrical testing activities involving switchgear, transformers, relays, and cable systems. Apprentices work closely with senior technicians to develop proficiency with electrical testing equipment, industry standards, and safe work practices.
Essential Functions
- Assist technicians with the inspection, testing, troubleshooting, and start-up of electrical power systems at customer sites.
- Assist with setup, operation, and breakdown of electrical testing equipment.
- Assist with testing activities involving low, medium, and high voltage electrical equipment including circuit breakers, transformers, switchgear, relays, and cables.
- Assist with collecting testing data and documenting results for technical reports.
- Assist with troubleshooting and diagnosing equipment issues under supervision.
- Interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation with guidance from senior technicians.
- Maintain testing tools, equipment, and vehicles in proper working conditions.
- Follow all company safety procedures and electrical safety standards while working around energized equipment.
- Participate in training programs to develop electrical testing skills and knowledge of industry standards such as NETA, NEC, NFPA, and OSHA.
- Travel with field teams to customer sites to support testing and maintenance activities.
- Provide support during after-hours service calls or emergency response situations as required.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Approximately 1–2 years of electrical, mechanical, or technical field experience preferred.
- Technical training, trade school certification, or an associate degree in electrical technology or related field preferred.
- Strong interest in learning electrical power systems testing and troubleshooting.
- Basic understanding of electrical systems and safety practices.
- Ability to follow direction and work effectively as part of a team.
- Ability and willingness to learn electrical testing procedures and industry standards including NETA, NEC, NFPA, and OSHA.
- Must be able to safely perform work around electrical equipment and adhere to all company safety procedures.
- Must possess basic computer skills including email, internet use, and data entry.
- Must be able to travel locally and regionally with periodic overnight travel as required by project needs.
- Must be legally eligible to operate a motor vehicle with a satisfactory driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate degree from an accredited two-year technical college in Electrical Power & Controls (EPC), Electrical Technology, or similar program.
- Relevant military training such as Army Prime Power, Air Force Electrical Power Production, or Navy Seabee programs.
- Prior exposure to electrical testing, commissioning, or maintenance of power systems.
- OSHA 30-hour, MSHA, NFPA 70E, or CPR/First Aid/AED certifications (training may be provided by AMP).
Employment Requirements
- Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening and participate in periodic, unannounced random drug and alcohol testing in accordance with company policy and customer requirements.
- Must successfully pass a pre-employment criminal background check.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain an acceptable driving record.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States and not require current or future sponsorship.
- Must be able to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
- Must be able to work flexible hours, including overtime, evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by operational needs.
- Must be willing and able to travel, including overnight travel, estimated at approximately 25% or more depending on project requirements.
- Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the position, including standing, walking, climbing, crawling, and lifting up to 50 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Location: Chattanooga, TN
Travel: Up to 25%
Compensation: Pay range for a Field Tech I range from $22 to $26 (depending on skillset, certification, and experience) per hour and eligible for overtime. Daily meal and incidentals per diem available when traveling for overnight work.
