Primary Position Purpose:
The Liability Claims Examiner is responsible for reviewing, evaluating, and settling property damage claims to ascertain the extent of exposure for commercial motor carriers (U.S. Xpress, Inc. and Total Transportation of MS, LLC). This role uses technical knowledge and relationship skills to effect fair and prompt resolutions of claims while minimizing risk exposure. The Examiner proactively manages a property damage claim inventory and effectively negotiates third-party transportation liability claims and/or dedicated customer liability claims.
Position Functions:
Manage claim exposures from inception to resolution. Gather and analyze facts related to property damage claims from various sources including driver and claimant interviews, police reports, and witness interviews.
Oversee claims-processing activities including initial acknowledgements, independent adjuster investigations, coverage review, liability assessments, and settlement negotiations.
Assess liability exposure based on knowledge of relevant state law including statutes of limitation, contributory negligence, and loss of use.
Provide claim resolution strategies and recommendations to ensure fair and prompt settlements.
Set and adjust reserves in accordance with department processes, ensuring that reserve activities align with claim details.
Request additional settlement authority from the supervisor when needed and handle claims above your designated authority level.
Review and examine claims to ensure validity including verifying data and source information used in settling claims. Negotiate and settle claims effectively and in line with department processes.
Collaborate in-person with all levels of the organization to harness collective intelligence of the workforce.
Attend all in-person meetings and trainings on recent developments, goals, and objectives. Participate in such discussions by offering input and advice.
Regularly engage remotely and in-person with customers and potential customers to establish rapport, open communication, and expectations.
What We’re Looking For:
Education
High school diploma or equivalent required
Associate’s degree or equivalent years of experience required
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Insurance, or related field preferred
Equivalent years of experience are defined as one year of professional experience for each year of college requested
Experience
1+2+ years of experience in liability claims handling, preferably in property damage or commercial motor carrier claims
Transportation, Logistics, and/or Tech industry experience a plus
Skills & Abilities
Strong understanding of property damage claims, liability assessment, and settlement strategies
Knowledge of state-specific insurance laws including liability and claims regulations
Ability to analyze complex information and make informed decisions
Excellent negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills
Ability to manage multiple claims simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
