UTEC Industrial is seeking an experienced Machinist to produce high-quality precision parts for aerospace, heavy industry, and material handling customers at our Spokane Valley headquarters. This is a full-time, hourly role for a well-rounded machinist who is equally comfortable on CNC and manual equipment, sawing and cutting stock to size, and supporting in-house heat treating — producing parts to tight tolerances with minimal supervision. The person in this position works across UTEC's full machining floor. On the CNC side: Mazak and Monarch CNC lathes (turning to 48-inch diameter), a Mori Seiki vertical machining center (milling to ±0.001 inch), a Marvel gantry saw (stock to 50 × 84 inches), and a HyPerformance HPR260HD plasma burn table with a Durma PL-C 2040 CNC cutting head. On the manual side: two manual lathes, two knee mills, a horizontal boring mill, an iron worker, multiple steel saws, two hydraulic presses, a radial arm drill, and assorted drill presses. Because UTEC is single-source — machining, sawing, fabrication, and heat treating under one roof — the role also involves cutting and preparing stock and supporting in-house heat treating (induction hardening, through-hardening, and quench-and-temper).
Responsibilities
- Read and interpret technical blueprints and design models
- Saw and cut raw stock — billets, forgings, and plate — to size on the gantry saw and steel saws
- Set up and operate both CNC and manual machines (lathes, knee mills, horizontal boring mill) at the correct speeds and feed rates
- Load raw materials and monitor machine operation to detect any problems or errors
- Inspect and measure finished parts to ensure they meet specifications
- Support in-house heat treating — load, monitor, and handle parts through hardening and tempering operations
- Perform routine maintenance on machines and replace any tools or parts as needed
- Adhere to all safety standards and regulations, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment
- Document and report any issues or irregularities that may arise during the machining process
- Collaborate with engineers and other machinists to ensure the smooth running of operations
Required qualifications
- 5+ years of machining experience across CNC and manual equipment (setup and operation)
- Strong shop math skills — calculate cuts, dimensions, and feeds/speeds, and convert accurately between fractions and decimals
- Basic working knowledge of G-code for CNC programming
- Ability to read and interpret technical blueprints and GD&T
- Proficiency with precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, bore gauges)
- Experience sawing and cutting stock (billets, forgings, plate) to size
- Able to operate — or willing to be certified on — overhead crane and forklift for handling large billets and forgings
- Able to lift approximately 50 lbs and stand for a full shift in a manufacturing environment
- Provide your own basic hand tools and measuring instruments
Preferred qualifications
- Manual lathe, knee mill, and horizontal boring mill experience
- Familiarity with in-house heat treating (induction hardening, through-hardening, quench-and-temper)
- Tight-tolerance work to ±0.001 inch
- Setup experience on Mazak, Monarch, or Mori Seiki controls
- Familiarity with heavy-industrial, crane-wheel, or aerospace components
