Director I, Leadership Communications (Hybrid)

We have an opportunity at our corporate offices in Chicago for a Director I, Leadership Communications (Hybrid) on our Enterprise Communication team. This is a hybrid position reporting into our Chicago, IL office, requiring 3 days a week in the office.

This role will contribute to development and leads execution of communications strategies to reinforce AMA leaders as true thought-leaders in the profession and to advance AMA’s mission and strategic priorities. Directs a team of writers who support AMA leadership (CEO Presidents, BOT, Senior Management) through speeches, presentations, letters, talking points, op-eds, and other written correspondence. Works with Senior Director of Thought Leadership to execute an external visibility strategy to showcase AMA leadership across platforms and at top conferences and events.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategic Messaging & Leader Communications

Contributes to development and leads execution of strategic messaging initiatives to support AMA leaders and audience-specific messaging; oversees development of speeches, presentations and briefing materials to elevate AMA thought leadership at marquee events
Writes and edits speeches for the CEO, Senior Leadership and Board Members and guides the creation of speeches, op-eds, briefing documents, letters, and presentations that compel audiences to think, feel or act in alignment with organizational goals
Leads development of AMA Viewpoints, articles and op-eds, based on deep understanding of AMA values, ethics, history, and policy
Oversees the process for engaging event hosts to gauge audience expectations, event agenda and logistics to support AMA leaders and tailor presentations for maximal impact
Works directly with AMA leaders to improve their public speaking and demonstrate thought-leadership in medicine
Collaborates across business units and channels to support AMA leaders; stays current and aware of AMA policies and plans
Collaborates with leadership to build best-in-class capabilities to develop and edit executive speeches, articles, or op-eds, by identifying and culling industry think tanks and leading external sources
Manages cross-departmental coordination and organization to ensure a highly coordinated approach to communications within Thought Leadership, Media Relations, Social Media and Employee Communications
Oversees the development of timely communications plans to support internal and external visibility and cross-departmental coordination

Maximizing event coordination and impact

Works with Board office to manage AMA leader public speaking schedule, including virtual and in-person conferences, meetings and podcasts
Oversees the creation and management of the AMA Integrated Calendar, coordinating external visibility among CEO, trustees and AMA staff
Works with Senior Director of Thought Leadership to develop and maintain an AMA Speakers Bureau of subject matter experts across departments
Works with others in department to evaluate effectiveness of AMA message deployment and develop a process for quantitative analysis

Staff Management

Leads, mentors and provides management oversight for staff
Responsible for setting objectives, evaluating employee performance, and fostering a collaborative team environment
Responsible for developing staff knowledge and skills to support career development

May include other responsibilities as assigned

REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s degree in communications, speech and/or creative writing required; Master’s degree preferred
10+ years of progressive experience in executive communications, speechwriting, strategic messaging, thought leadership, or related communication functions, with some experience in the health care industry strongly preferred
3+ years of experience in people management required; able to attract and develop talent.
Proven expertise and experience in developing and implementing strategic communications plans for senior executive audiences
Excellent relationship building skills and strong problem-solving skills
Excellent verbal communications, negotiation and presentation skills; must be able to effectively communicate with Senior leadership and stakeholders
Superior written skills to portray ideas and policies in a clear and concise manner while capturing the voice of the speaker
Proven project management skills required; demonstrated success in managing and prioritizing multiple, complex tasks and responsibilities
Demonstrated leadership ability to drive results through collaboration, influence and effective stakeholder partnerships across functions

This role is an exempt position, and the salary range for this position is $128,906 - $174,241. This is the lowest to highest salary we believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee’s pay within the salary range will be determined by a variety of factors including but not limited to business consideration and geographical location, as well as candidate qualifications, such as skills, education, and experience.
