Full Job Description

Manufacturing Buyer / Cost Estimator

Location: Carol Stream, IL

Reports to: Supply Chain Manager Salary range: $91,100–$99,900

About the role

We are hiring a buyer who thinks like a shop estimator. This is a cost-reduction role as much as a purchasing role. You will analyze drawing packages, build should-cost estimates, and use them to validate supplier quotes and drive cost out of complex machined and fabricated parts. We can train our purchasing process; the manufacturing and estimating expertise must already be in place.

What you'll do

Analyze RFQ and drawing packages and build should-cost estimates, breaking parts down by material, operations, setup, machine/cycle time, labor hours and finishing.
Review supplier quotes, bills of material and job routings for accuracy and manufacturability, and challenge pricing that does not reconcile to a should-cost estimate.
Identify cost-reduction opportunities by evaluating alternative manufacturing processes, materials or designs and proposing them to Engineering.
Interpret detailed 2D/3D drawings, GD&T, tolerances and specifications to determine manufacturing requirements and sourcing strategy.
Manage purchasing of complex machined and fabricated parts, assemblies, supplies and services, aligned to MRP requirements for cost, quality and timely delivery.
Build and maintain the supplier base, resolve non-conformities, and mentor junior-level buyers.

What you bring

Hands-on manufacturing background: you have personally quoted, estimated or produced parts (machining, fabrication, welding, finishing).
Expert at reading engineering drawings, GD&T and tolerances.
Job-costing / should-cost fluency: you can estimate labor hours and manufacturing cost directly from a print.
7-10+ years in a manufacturing environment. Estimator, Machinist, Manufacturing/Process Engineer or CNC Programmer backgrounds are ideal.
Proficiency in 3D CAD/AutoCAD; MRP/ERP and supplier-management experience preferred.
Associate's or Bachelor's degree in manufacturing, mechanical or industrial technology, or equivalent hands-on experience.

Pay: $91,100.00 - $99,900.00 per year
