Full Job Description

The Emergency Room Staff Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing high-quality, patient-centered nursing care to individuals presenting with a wide range of urgent and emergent medical conditions. Working in a fast-paced environment, the ER RN assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates patient care while collaborating with physicians, advanced practice providers, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure timely and effective treatment.

The ER RN applies critical thinking, clinical judgment, and evidence-based practices to stabilize patients, manage acute and traumatic conditions, and support patients and families during emergencies. This role requires the ability to prioritize care, respond quickly to changing patient conditions, and maintain compliance with hospital policies, regulatory standards, and patient safety protocols.

The Emergency Room Staff RN also plays a key role in promoting a culture of teamwork, accountability, and compassionate care while supporting the hospital’s mission to deliver safe, efficient, and high-quality emergency services to the community.

Assessment of Patients

Assesses physical, psychological, and social dimensions of patients, applies knowledge of illness, injuries, and diseases, and uses available resources in the assessment process.
Provides written assessment of patients on admission and subsequently in the nursing process.
Summarizes assessment data and makes a nursing diagnosis, which is charted and communicated to other patients and care providers.

Care Planning

Initiates plan based on nursing diagnosis and applied knowledge of specific illnesses, injuries, diseases, human behavior, and appropriate standards of care.
Documents specific nursing orders, develops short and long-term goals specifying expected outcomes following intervention.
Utilizes all available resources in planning care and consults as necessary with clinical specialists, supervisors, physicians, etc.
Updates plan of care as necessary based on continuing assessments of the patient.

Implementation of Care

Implements clinical and technical aspects of care and nursing orders in accordance with established policies and procedures. Intervenes using proper techniques, procedures, and safety precautions to meet the patient's individual needs.
Implements medical plan through passing medications and intervention with the physician's order.
Documents nursing interventions, patient responses, effectiveness, complications, etc.; communicates information to peers and physicians.

Evaluates Nursing Care Provided

Reviews and evaluates the effectiveness of the intervention and implementation of plans
Determines the level of accomplishment of short and long-term goals and expected outcomes following intervention.
Reviews and evaluates personal nursing practice as compared to the standard of care and original plan of care as supported by peers and other resource personnel
Develops a discharge plan that uses all available resources.

Assess the need for patient and family instructions

Reviews patient and family knowledge of disease, illness, and readiness to accept leaving and care for the patient at home
Identifies needs for care home, or alternatives such as out-patient treatment, extended care facility, etc.
Establishes and maintains interpersonal relationships with patients, visitors, and other hospital personnel, which assures confidentiality of patient information.
Participates in and supports research programs and activities, and also participates in nursing committees and other activities that promote the growth and development of nursing and/or patient care.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree in nursing required
(2-5) years of clinical experience in an acute or ambulatory healthcare setting required
(2-5) years of experience in clinical performance review required
Demonstrated experience supporting regulatory compliance, accreditation, or survey readiness strongly preferred
Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in Illinois required and must be in good standing
Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Trauma Certification (TNCC or equivalent), Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) within 30 days
