Full Job Description

Conducts preliminary environmental field inspections of industrial and commercial enterprises to ensure enforcement and compliance to the Environment and Sustainability Ordinance of Cook County. Monitors the environment (i.e. air, water, noise, and solid waste) in regard to ordinance violation. Observes, measures, and evaluates performance of stationary (fixed) and mobile (non-fixed) sources of pollutants to determine emission contaminants to the environment. Disseminates environmental information service to the general public relevant to the activities of the Department of Environment and Sustainability. Cites pollution violators and provides environmental information service to the general public. Completes training and obtains certification and licensing required to fulfill the required duties of the position. Location: Work in the Field.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree AND
Two (2) years of experience in environmental protection and consulting.

-OR-

Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree AND
Four (4) years of experience in environmental protection and consulting

-OR-

Possession of a High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) Certificate AND
Six (6) years of experience in environmental protection and consulting.
Valid driver's license and proof of automobile insurance IS REQUIRED.

This position is considered a safety-sensitive position. Candidates who are selected to fill safety-sensitive positions must pass a required drug test as part of the pre-employment background check process.

Degrees awarded outside of the United States with the exception of those awarded in one of the United States territories and Canada, must be credentialed by the World Education Services (WES), Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE) or a National Association of Credential Evaluation (NACES) member organization.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS

Ability to research, interpret, and explain environmental regulations, including those of Cook County, Illinois, and U.S. federal rules (including OSHA safety standards).
Knowledge of air pollution emissions, industrial processes (combustion), construction principles, and operation of pollution control devices.
Knowledge of portable monitoring devices and measurement tools used in environmental pollution control, and willingness/ability to wear required personal protective equipment (including respirators).
Skills in strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to conduct thorough field investigations and produce detailed, accurate written reports on environmental inspections.
Skill in attention to detail and strong observational skills to identify potential environmental hazards or violations.
Ability to work independently in diverse environments (industrial, construction, outdoor) and willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and evolving regulations.
This position requires moderate to extensive travel to work assignments throughout Cook County, for which the employee must provide his or her own adequate means of transportation.

Hourly Wage: $34.395/HOURLY

Physical Requirements

Light Work involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job/occupation is rated Light Work when it requires: (1) walking or standing to a significant degree; (2) sitting most of the time while pushing or pulling arm or leg controls; or (3) working at a production rate pace while constantly pushing or pulling materials even though the weight of the materials is negligible.

This position requires successful completion of post-offer tests, which may include a background check, drug screen and medical examination.

Falsification of any information in the application process will result in disqualification, dismissal after hire, and/or placement on the County’s Ineligible for Rehire List for a period of two (2) or five (5) years.
