Senior Manager of Organizing

Job Description

HANA Center (HANA) is a Chicago-area non-profit organization working to meet the critical needs of

Korean, Asian American, and multiethnic immigrant communities and build power toward systemic

change. HANA has offices in Chicago and Prospect Heights, Illinois.

Utilizing a services-to-organizing model, HANA focuses on developing the leadership of the most

vulnerable community members, including low-income, limited English proficient, undocumented

immigrants, youth, women, seniors, LGBTQ+ people, and adoptees. HANA’s primary organizing

communities are multigenerational Koreans and multiethnic immigrants in Albany Park and the

northwest suburbs. Led by a strong community base and leadership, HANA builds community power to

achieve social, economic, and racial justice. HANA organizes on-going community education and cultural

programs, political education series, skills-building trainings, and year-round civic engagement. HANA

also advocates for policies that support all immigrants, including undocumented, youth, adults, families,

older adults, and intercountry adoptees.

Position Summary

HANA’s Senior Manager of Organizing is a key member of HANA’s leadership team. The Senior Manager

provides deep understanding and experience in community leadership development, power building,

base membership development, and campaigns with a focus on empowering directly impacted and

vulnerable community members to create systemic changes. The Senior Manager works in close

coordination with HANA’s Executive Director to build a strong team of community organizers and work

with them to align base-building, campaigns, policy, civic engagement, and leadership training. A

successful Senior Manager provides strategic thinking and critical support, thus enabling the

organization to meet its mission and build the power of the community.

Major Responsibilities

● Directly supervise and regularly provide guidance for Organizing Team staff, interns, and fellows

● Support organizers to build a powerful base of multigenerational leaders grounded in

relationship building through regular outreach, listening sessions, one-on-ones, skill-building,

political education, community building programs, and leadership development

● Work closely with the Executive Director and the Organizing team to develop and articulate

overall organizational strategy, goals, and plans

● Oversee and strengthen HANA’s membership program that engages members in HANA’s

organizing program on an ongoing basis

● Manage HANA’s organizing practice to integrate issue campaigns, civic engagement,

communications, actions/mobilizations, and community power building

● Facilitate the organizing team and community leaders to create and execute campaign

strategies and goals by energizing community base and catalyzing for continued progressive

change

● Create systems to track and evaluate base leadership development and strength

● Ensure coordination with other HANA programs to integrate an organizing framework across the

organization and provide pathways for community members to move from services to

organizing

● Identify and ensure training and support needs of Community Organizers are met equipping

them with necessary tools to conduct one-on-ones; build leadership team; develop power

analyses; and develop and implement campaigns

● Build strong working relationships with other community organizations, AAPI organizations,

immigrant justice organizations in Illinois, and HANA’s national network, NAKASEC

● Represent HANA in various settings including coalitions, conferences, donors, funders,

community partners, and the press

● Identify and contribute to submission of grant proposals that strategically sustain and deepen

impact of programs and organization

● Ensure timely and accurate reporting internally and externally on the status of major

programmatic milestones and impact

● Participate in and complete all required trainings

● Other duties as assigned

Key Qualifications:

● Demonstrated commitment to immigrant rights and social, racial, and economic justice

● A belief in communities' ability to support each other, organize, and achieve desired goals

together

● At least 3 years of relevant professional experience working on Korean American, Asian

American, or immigrant community issues, labor, or electoral organizations with success in

developing and winning campaigns

● At least 2 years of experience supervising staff with a strong track record of building diverse

teams and developing staff leadership

● Exceptional people management skills; proven ability to set goals, delegate responsibilities, and

manage staff performance, train and develop cross-functional teams, coach and inspire the

leadership capacity of team members, and foster a healthy organizational culture with a sense

of community and pride

● Innovative approach, strategic thinking, solution-oriented and analytical problem-solving skills;

ability to adapt as needed, self-manage, and prioritize between and manage multiple demands

● Exceptional communicator and ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in a wide range of

organizational, partnership, and public settings; demonstrated strength in managing and

resolving conflict

● Excellence designing and leading high stakes, fast-paced projects to completion; ability to

replicate, expand, and deepen the impact of organizational initiatives

● Deep subject matter knowledge and program management experience in one or more of

HANA’s core service areas

● Familiarity with and ease of use of common program evaluation and relationship management

methods and software

● Valid driver’s license, access to a car, and ability to travel to both HANA offices and for events as

needed

● Flexibility to work evenings and weekends

● Ability to travel and participate in national campaigns, convenings, and conferences

● Bilingual in Korean, both verbal and written, highly preferred

Reports To: Executive Director

Compensation: This is a full-time position with a competitive salary range of $75,000-$90,000 and

benefits that include paid leave, paid sick leave, health, dental, vision, short-term disability, long-term

disability, life, and 401K.
