Job/Department Summary:
As the University's senior Law Enforcement Officer, the Chief is responsible for the overall leadership and management of the University Police Department (UPD) in the discharge of its responsibilities for the overall protection of the life and property within the jurisdictional boundaries of the University. This includes planning, organizing, and directing the day-to-day operations of UPD. This position reports to the Vice President for Business and Finance. The UPD is a fully sworn and POST certified police agency.
Required Education and Experience:
- Requires graduation from an accredited four-year college or university in a related field, or equivalent. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
- Must have at least ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in a sworn law enforcement setting, including 3 years of management experience.
- Must satisfy all California P.O.S.T. minimum employment standards and possess, or be able to obtain, a P.O.S.T. Management Certificate.
- Must possess, or be eligible to obtain, a valid California driver's license.
Time Base: Full-time
Pay Plan: 12/12
Work Schedule: Mon-Fri 8:00am-5:00pm, Summer: Mon-Thurs 7:00am-5:30pm
Anticipated Hiring Range: $190,000 - $200,000 per year. Salary commensurate with education and experience of the individual selected.

This position is a Higher Education Employer-Employee Relations Act (HEERA) designated managerial position and comes under the Management Personnel Plan (MPP) of the California State University. Individuals appointed to management positions serve at the pleasure of the President or designee. They are excluded from the collective bargaining process, are not subject to probationary service, and do not receive tenure or permanent status. This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
A valid California Driver’s License must be maintained throughout employment in this position, as well as successful completion and continued compliance with CSU Defensive Driving Course.
The duties of this position will include participation in a decision that may have a material/financial benefit to the incumbent. Therefore, this is a “designated position” under the California State University’s Conflict of Interest Code and the incumbent will be required to file a Form 700: Statement of Economic Interest and is subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.
