About Altus Equity Group
Altus Equity Group is a private equity real estate firm specializing in multifamily, industrial, and value-add investments across the United States. With $450M+ in assets under management and a track record of 26.09% realized IRR, we are a team of dedicated professionals committed to delivering above-market, risk-adjusted returns for our investors. Our mission, "We Are Invested", reflects our deep financial, relational and philosophical alignment with every stakeholder we serve. We are growing toward $1B AUM by 2030, and we need sharp, accountable professionals to help us get there.
The Role
We are seeking an experienced Property Accounting Manager to own property-level accounting for a portfolio of multifamily and commercial properties. This is a hands-on team leader role that sits at the intersection of technical accounting, financial reporting, and cross-functional collaboration. You will be responsible for all property level accounting including overseeing Property Accountant(s), driving the monthly and quarterly close and reporting processes, and managing accounting support for our property management teams.
This role reports to the Senior Controller and is a critical function within our Accounting segment.
What You'll Own
Monthly Property-Level Accounting
You will oversee and execute accurate, timely property accounting each month. This means managing the full close cycle, completing bank reconciliations with no uninvestigated aged items, investigating and resolving material variances, and ensuring accounting adjustments and reclassifications are handled correctly. Timeliness and accuracy are highly important.
Financial Reporting
You will be responsible for delivering accurate property-level financial statements on a monthly and quarterly basis — for entity, investor and management reporting purposes. Beyond the financials, you will support budget variance analysis, forecasting, and ad hoc reporting requests from internal and external parties. Minimal corrections. Consistent delivery. High standards.
Property Management Accounting Support
You will work closely with property management staff to ensure the accuracy of accounting information across the portfolio. This includes coordinating with onsite staff on GL coding, utility billing and reimbursement, rent charges and credits, and vendor management. You will also assist with training on proper coding and documentation practices, and ensure a clean data handoff between on-site teams, Corporate Accounting and other stakeholders.
Quality Control and Process Improvement
You will strengthen accounting controls and continuously improve the processes your team relies on. We expect you to identify and implement at least one process improvement per quarter, review your team's work for accuracy and adequacy, and ensure that your reporting supports sound decision-making.
Team Management and Development
You will directly manage Property Accountant(s), allocate responsibilities thoughtfully, and invest in the professional growth of your team. We are a people-first organization, and we expect our managers to develop their staff with the same intentionality they bring to their financial work.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2–3 years in property accounting and 1–2 years in a supervisory or lead capacity
- Strong working knowledge of GAAP and property-level accounting practices for multifamily and/or commercial real estate
- Experience with property management accounting software (AppFolio, Yardi, MRI or similar)
- Demonstrated ability to manage a monthly close cycle and deliver financials by deadlines
- Strong analytical skills with a high attention to detail and low tolerance for inaccuracy
- Clear, professional communicator who can work effectively with both accounting staff and non-accounting colleagues
- Self-directed and accountable — you manage your team and your workload without needing to be managed yourself
