Senior Staff Accountant

Food Distribution | Accounting & Finance

Position Summary

The Senior Staff Accountant supports the accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of financial reporting for a fast-paced food distribution business. This role owns key general ledger activities, account reconciliations, month-end close tasks, sales and use tax filings, and analysis of customer and vendor activity. The position also provides oversight and guidance for offshore accounting support staff and partners closely with operations, purchasing, sales, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.

Reports to: Accounting Manager

Classification: Full-time, Exempt

Key Responsibilities

· Perform and support month-end and year-end close activities, including preparing and posting journal entries, accruals, reclassifications, and recurring entries.

· Prepare and review balance sheet reconciliations; research and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner.

· Analyze general ledger accounts, financial results, and period-over-period variances; communicate findings and recommended corrections to management.

· Reconcile company credit cards and ensure transactions are supported, coded correctly, approved, and recorded in the proper period.

· Review vendor and customer accounting activity, including accounts receivable balances, deductions, credits, billbacks, rebates, allowances, and promotional programs.

· Process vendor payments in accordance with approved payment schedules, supporting documentation, and internal controls.

· Support inventory accounting by reviewing inventory adjustments, cost variances, shrinkage, obsolescence, and cut-off activity, as assigned.

· Prepare and file sales and use tax returns and maintain supporting schedules for applicable jurisdictions.

· Coordinate accounting tasks performed by offshore support staff, including credit card reconciliations, vendor accounts receivable, and billback administration; review work for accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.

· Assist with audit requests, tax support, and preparation of schedules and documentation for internal and external reviewers.

· Maintain clear accounting workpapers and ensure transactions comply with company policies, internal controls, and U.S. GAAP.

· Identify opportunities to streamline reconciliations, improve reporting, strengthen controls, and automate recurring accounting processes.

· Maintain fixed asset records and support additions, disposals, depreciation, and related reconciliations; assist with lease accounting schedules and entries.

· Support special projects, system implementations, and ad hoc financial analysis as requested.

Qualifications

· Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field required.

· Four or more years of progressive general accounting experience; food distribution, wholesale, grocery, consumer products, or another high-volume inventory environment preferred.

· Strong working knowledge of U.S. GAAP, general ledger accounting, account reconciliations, and month-end close.

· Experience with sales and use tax filings, customer deductions, billbacks, rebates, or trade promotional activity preferred.

· Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, lookups, formulas, and large-data analysis.

· Experience with an ERP or accounting system; familiarity with inventory and distribution systems is preferred.

· Familiarity with fixed asset accounting and lease accounting, including depreciation, asset disposals, reconciliations, and lease schedules.

· Demonstrated ability to review work, coordinate remote or offshore resources, and manage deadlines with limited supervision.
