Full Job Description

Qualified Behavioral Health Specialist (QBHS)Position Summary

We are seeking a compassionate, reliable, and dedicated Qualified Behavioral Health Specialist (QBHS) to join our growing behavioral health team. The QBHS will provide outpatient, community-based behavioral health services to individuals experiencing mental health and/or substance use challenges. This role focuses on helping clients develop coping skills, improve daily functioning, achieve treatment goals, and successfully integrate into their communities.

The ideal candidate is passionate about supporting individuals on their recovery journey and enjoys working collaboratively with clients, families, and multidisciplinary treatment teams. This position is ideal for individuals who are comfortable working independently in community settings and who understand the value of providing services in clients' natural environments.

Key Responsibilities

Deliver Medicaid-eligible services, including Community Psychiatric Supportive Treatment (CPST) and Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR), under appropriate clinical supervision.
Implement interventions and activities that support the client's Individualized Treatment Plan (ITP).
Assist clients in developing daily living skills, emotional regulation strategies, communication skills, and healthy coping mechanisms.
Support clients in accessing community resources, educational opportunities, employment services, and other supports as needed.
Promote community integration, independence, and overall wellness.
Conduct skill-building activities in home, community, school, office-based, or other approved settings as appropriate.
Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant documentation in accordance with Ohio Medicaid, OhioMHAS, and agency standards.
Collaborate effectively with therapists, case managers, psychiatrists, schools, families, and other community partners.
Participate in treatment team meetings, supervision sessions, agency trainings, and professional development opportunities.
Provide crisis support and assist with care coordination when needed.

Service Delivery Expectations

This position provides outpatient behavioral health services in community settings. Unlike traditional office-based roles, the majority of services are delivered where clients live and function in their daily lives.

Services may be provided in:

Clients' homes
Community centers
Libraries
Schools (when appropriate)
Agency office locations for scheduled appointments
Other approved community settings

While office appointments may be scheduled when clinically appropriate, applicants should understand that this is primarily a community-based position. Clinicians are expected to travel throughout the service area and meet clients in their homes and community environments.

Applicants should be comfortable working with diverse populations and providing services in a variety of neighborhoods, communities, and living situations. Success in this role requires professionalism, strong boundaries, adaptability, and the ability to build rapport with clients in real-world settings.

Minimum Qualifications

To be eligible as a Qualified Behavioral Health Specialist (QBHS) in Ohio, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

High school diploma or GED and a minimum of three (3) years of experience working with individuals with mental health or substance use disorders.

Associate degree in behavioral health or a related field and a minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience.

Bachelor's degree in a behavioral health-related field (such as Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, Human Services, or Sociology) and a minimum of one (1) year of relevant experience.

Master's degree in a behavioral health-related field.

In addition, all employees must successfully complete required agency training, including trauma-informed care, cultural competency, and any continuing education requirements mandated by Ohio Medicaid and OhioMHAS.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience providing CPST, PSR, TBS, or other community behavioral health services.
Familiarity with Ohio Medicaid documentation and billing requirements.
Experience using Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems.
CPR and First Aid certification.
Active NPI number.
Medicaid Provider Number (MPN) or ability to obtain one.
Experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and families.
Knowledge of trauma-informed care and recovery-oriented practices.

Other Requirements

Successful completion of BCI and FBI background checks.
Valid driver's license, reliable transportation, and proof of insurance.
Ability to travel throughout the community to provide services.
Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings or weekends based on client needs.
Strong communication, organization, and time-management skills.
Ability to work independently while maintaining collaboration with the treatment team.
