Full Job Description

Successful completion of all components of the examination process is required in order to be considered. The testing process consists of a video exam, counting exam, reading exam, and writing exam. Candidates must pass all components of the examination process to be considered for an interview. Candidates must also pass a criminal background investigation and a PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act) check suitable for law enforcement, including a criminal record and drivers’ license check. Candidates are required to have a police record free of pending charges and felony convictions. Prior to final selection, candidates will be subject to pre-employment drug screening and psychological assessment. -* SEE IMPORTANT EXAMINATION DETAILS BELOW*

JOB OVERVIEW: The purpose of this position is to perform inmate supervision, custody, control, escort, intake, release, building security and jail recordkeeping tasks in an assigned area. The work is performed under the supervision of the Corporal and Sergeant.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs housing unit control center tasks. Observes inmate activities and maintains discipline, security, custody, and control.
Addresses inmate concerns and answers questions. Operates high security doors. Observes Correctional Officers in unit. Sorts, opens, and inspects in-coming inmate mail. Issues hygiene and health supplies.
Performs Internal Transport Officer tasks. Responds to and intervenes in incidents and altercations.
Subdues inmates. Responds to medical emergencies and administers first aid.
Conducts cell moves and searches. Escorts inmates to appointments for visitation, attorney visits, law library, medical/dental care, arraignment, etc.
Counts inmates. Participates in riot control. Escorts inmates to recreation out of unit. Delivers meals, water, ice, and dietary supplements to inmates. Provides security for facility court room and support rooms (medical/programming etc.)
Oversees receipt of food and other supplies. Oversees repair and maintenance personnel. Conducts disciplinary review of inmates.
Assist Booking staff when needed
Documents general physical condition, conducts inmate searches, and seizes, inventories, and secures inmate personal property.
Conducts new inmate orientation to facility operations, housing units and inmate handbook
Performs Central Control Officer tasks. Monitors facility high security doors. Controls inter-facility movement and communication. Accepts and receipts bond payments and inmate account deposits.
Receives, sorts, and logs in-coming and out-going computer mail. Greets, logs, and directs visitors.
Ensures visitor security. Monitors security cameras. Controls facility keys and security. Dispatches personnel via radio as needed. Answers and routes in-coming telephone calls.
Logs activities. Prepares incident, complaint, log, and investigation reports. Initiates disciplinary reports to include a request for inmate disciplinary action in response to a rule violation.
Participates in on-going training. Attends pre-shift and other mandatory meetings.
Maintains knowledge of current corrections policies, procedures, and practices; and techniques to maintain inmate custody, control, discipline, and security.
May perform specialized officer duties such as Fire/Safety, Facility, Equipment, Plans, MULES, First Aid, Commissary when assigned, Property, Fleet Management, Legal Library, Firearms and Training.
May also be responsible for laundry services to a specialized duty, an officer may be required to attend specialized training, become familiar with unique equipment particular to their assignments.
Must be available to work various schedules as shifts rotate days/nights/weekends/holidays
May be required to work mandatory overtime on the same or a different shift than the one assigned.
Ability to work 12.25 hours on regular shift with potential to work 16 hours when needed.
Perform all other duties assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

Education

General/technical high school diploma or GED equivalent

Certifications

Valid Missouri motor vehicle operator license is required.

Job Experience

1 year of experience in security, corrections, law enforcement is a plus, but not required.
Must be available to work various schedules as shifts rotate.

Ability to pass all legal, physical, mental, and performance standards.
Employment is contingent on successfully passing a full criminal background check, drug screen, and psychological exam.

EXAMINATION PROCESS OVERVIEW:

Video Exam – Consists of 80 multiple choice questions based on Correctional Officer scenarios
Counting Exam – Consists of two parts with a total of 30 questions
Reading Exam - Tests the ability to use appropriate word selections throughout sentences
Written Exam – Tests the ability to complete a report consisting of the following: the facts of an incident, proper punctuation, and correct spelling
Candidates must pass all components of the process to be considered for an interview

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

Upon submission and review of the Correctional Officer application, applicants will be notified by the St. Charles County Department of Corrections to be scheduled for testing.
Testing will be held in the St. Charles County Department of Corrections located at 301 N. Second Street, St. Charles, MO 63301.
The testing process will take approximately 3 hours. - When arriving, please allow extra time for parking and check in.
A valid driver license or I.D. must be presented at the time of testing.

BENEFITS: This is a full-time, 168 hours/28-day cycle position that includes a full range of benefits including Paid Time Off, Extended Medical Leave, Holidays, Employee Health, Dental, Life, Disability, Retirement, Lateral Entry and Tuition Assistance Programs. Correctional employees are subject to working any shift and/or day including holidays. May be required to work up to eight (8) hours of overtime per day.
