Job Overview
Monticello Academy is seeking a highly organized, safety-minded, and experienced Transportation Operations Manager to help build and manage our student transportation system from the ground up.
This is a hands-on transportation leadership role. The Transportation Operations Manager will not only manage the transportation program, but will also serve as one of the school’s regular daily bus drivers. This position is responsible for helping launch and oversee daily student transportation operations, including route planning, daily driving, driver supervision, bus readiness, fleet maintenance coordination, regulatory compliance, transportation procedures, safety systems, records, and communication with school leadership and families.
Monticello Academy recently received a $2 million Charter School Program Expansion Grant to support the expansion of our West Point campus through junior high. A major part of this expansion includes creating a reliable transportation system that will allow more families and students to access Monticello Academy’s rigorous academic program.

Position Overview
The Transportation Operations Manager will report to the Director of Operations and serve as the primary manager of Monticello Academy’s transportation program. This person will help establish the policies, procedures, staffing, routes, maintenance systems, safety protocols, and communication practices needed to operate a safe, reliable, and compliant student transportation system.
The successful candidate will be able to manage both the strategic and day-to-day aspects of transportation. This includes building systems, driving a regular bus route, supervising drivers, ensuring regulatory compliance, monitoring vehicle readiness, coordinating routes, responding to transportation concerns, and continuously improving the quality and efficiency of service.
Key Responsibilities
- Help launch Monticello Academy’s student transportation system, including daily routes, staffing, procedures, safety expectations, and operational systems.
- Serve as one of the school’s regular daily bus drivers for morning and/or afternoon student routes.
- Develop, monitor, and adjust bus routes to support student access, safety, efficiency, and reliability.
- Supervise, schedule, train, support, and evaluate bus drivers and transportation staff.
- Ensure drivers meet all applicable licensing, training, background check, medical, and safety requirements.
- Maintain compliance with applicable federal, state, and local student transportation laws, rules, regulations, reporting requirements, and safety expectations.
- Maintain accurate transportation records, including driver files, training documentation, vehicle records, inspection records, route documentation, incident reports, and other required compliance records.
- Coordinate bus readiness, including pre-route and post-route procedures, preventive maintenance, inspections, repairs, cleaning, fueling, and required equipment.
- Serve as the primary liaison with maintenance providers, inspection entities, fuel vendors, transportation vendors, and related service providers.
- Communicate route information, delays, changes, expectations, and transportation updates clearly to families, drivers, staff, and school leaders.
- Respond promptly and professionally to transportation concerns from parents, staff, drivers, and school leadership.
- Coordinate with campus leaders and office staff regarding student transportation needs, approved school activities, field trips, and transportation-related logistics.
- Assist with transportation budget planning, cost tracking, vendor coordination, purchasing recommendations, and long-range fleet planning.
- Recommend improvements to transportation policies, procedures, routes, staffing, equipment, safety systems, and family communication.
- Promote a culture of safety, professionalism, reliability, and strong service to students and families.

Required Qualifications
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate school bus and passenger endorsements.
- Ability and willingness to drive regular daily school bus routes.
- Experience in transportation operations, school transportation, fleet management, logistics, dispatch, driver supervision, or a related field.
- Knowledge of transportation safety practices and regulatory compliance requirements.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to supervise employees, manage schedules, maintain records, and coordinate vendors.
- Ability to safely operate a school bus, complete required pre-trip and post-trip inspections, and perform the physical duties associated with student transportation, with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Ability to pass all required background checks and meet school employment requirements.
- Clean driving record.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience managing or supporting a school transportation program.
- Knowledge of Utah school transportation requirements.
- Experience supervising bus drivers or transportation staff.
- Experience with route planning, transportation software, fleet maintenance systems, or dispatch systems.
- Familiarity with student safety procedures, emergency response planning, and school operations.
- Mechanical knowledge or experience coordinating vehicle maintenance.
- Experience supporting transportation logistics for school activities, field trips, or similar events.
- Spanish-language communication ability.
Schedule
- Full-time position during the school year, with a modified summer schedule.
- Regular school-year availability is required before morning routes and after afternoon routes to complete pre-route and post-route responsibilities, ensure buses are ready, address driver needs, and properly close out transportation operations.
- Some school days may require early mornings, late afternoons, extended hours, or adjusted schedules based on route needs, inspections, maintenance, driver coverage, weather, emergencies, field trips, school events, or other transportation responsibilities.
- Summer responsibilities may include route planning, enrollment-based route adjustments, driver training, compliance preparation, vehicle maintenance coordination, inspections, policy and procedure updates, vendor coordination, and preparation for the upcoming school year.
