Senior Accountant - Utilities

Senior Accountant - Utilities

Location: Downtown Cleveland

Pay: 80k-100k DOE

Position Overview
The Senior Accountant - Utilities is responsible for accurate and timely financial reporting, accounting operations and regulatory support specific to utility operations. This role ensures GAAP compliance across the general ledger and financial statements, leads month-end close activities, performs account reconciliations and fixed asset accounting, and provides analytical support for rate cases, cost-of-service studies and budgeting/forecasting. The Senior Accountant partners with cross-functional teams, auditors and regulators to maintain strong internal controls and support strategic financial decision-making.

Key Responsibilities

Prepare and review monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and company policies.
Lead month-end close activities including preparing and posting journal entries, reconciling general ledger accounts and resolving reconciling items.
Maintain and reconcile the general ledger, ensuring accurate subledger integration and account rollforwards.
Perform account reconciliations for balance sheet accounts and investigate and resolve variances.
Manage fixed asset accounting including capital additions, disposals, depreciation, and reconciliations of the fixed asset register.
Provide financial analyses and detailed support for regulatory rate cases and rate filings, including preparation of schedules and documentation for regulatory submissions.
Conduct cost of service and cost allocation studies to support rate design, budgeting and internal decision-making.
Develop and maintain budgets, forecasts and rolling forecasts; analyze variances and provide actionable insights to management.
Coordinate with external auditors and internal stakeholders to support audits, regulatory reviews and inquiries.

Qualifications

Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance or related field.
5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in utilities or regulated industries is a huge plus.
Demonstrated knowledge of GAAP and experience preparing financial statements and disclosures.
Direct experience supporting rate cases, rate filings or regulatory accounting activities.
Strong general ledger experience and proficiency with month-end close, journal entries and account reconciliations.
Experience with fixed asset accounting and cost of service / cost allocation methodologies.
Proven budgeting and forecasting experience, including variance analysis and financial modeling.
Advanced Excel skills and familiarity with ERP/financial systems a plus (e.g., Oracle, SAP, JD Edwards, or similar).
Excellent analytical, problem-solving and organizational skills with high attention to detail.
