DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SHELTER ADVOCATE

Job Description

Purpose: To assists Domestic Violence victims who are residing in the Emergency shelter/safe-house. The advocate is responsible for assisting shelter residents to access their strengths, assess their needs. Provide crisis intervention by answering the 24/7 crisis line. Provide direct and referral services to promote personal safety, stability and self-sufficiency.

Responsibilities:

Respond to calls and provide immediate crisis intervention via the crisis line for victims, survivors, family members, friends, and other service providers.
Provide advocacy based services to victims in a culturally relevant and linguistically appropriate manner.
Coordinate language interpretation through our contracted Translation Station for any victims who needs interpretative services on the crisis line (in any language).
Advocate for victims when services are needed through the crisis line.
Coordinate safe emergency housing for all victims fleeing though the Domestic Violence
Web site for certified shelters and other housing resources.
Meet with each victim who is entering the shelter to conduct an initial needs assessment and develop a personal safety plan.
Distribute emergency supplies as needed to victims entering the shelter and shelter residents.
Provide victim with an orientation to the shelter, safety information and rules and regulations.
Develop knowledge of community resources, utilize advocacy skills to teach self advocacy to victims so that victims can expand their use of resources in the community.
Teach skill development to help with self-advocacy, problem solving and stress management to improve outcome for shelter residents.
Complete all appropriate documentation and statistical data as required.
Make relevant and appropriate referrals for victims based on their needs.
Monitor the security system for any problems and call 911.
Be available to residents to provide emotional support as needed.
Provide all communications and interactions with victims and staff in a respectful manner, treating all with dignity.
Provide daily monitoring of the Shelter, equipment and immediate grounds ensuring that everything is in good, sound working order, reporting to Shelter Manager through written and verbal communication any problems or repair needs.*
Ensure that the shelter is clean, sanitary and all foods are current on a daily basis. Work with and along side of residents to do daily cleaning chores, teaching good housekeeping skills.
Perform walk through inspections and monitoring of the shelter on a regular basis during assigned work hours.
Attend staff and training meetings
Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

At a minimum a high school diploma, preferred a Bachelor’s degree in social services. Some experience is needed in residential services and responding to crisis line/hot line calls. This position requires excellent listening and communication skills. The ability to work efficiently in a crisis. Must possess the ability to work as a team member. Previous experience in working with Domestic Violence Victims is preferred.

The positions available are for weekends, and overnight

Must be flexible and understand the responsibilities of an emergency domestic violence shelter for women and children.
