JOB DESCRIPTION *

Overview
Provides comprehensive medical services for members of family, regardless of age or sex within the scope of training. Diagnose, treat, and help prevent diseases and injuries that commonly occur in the general population. May refer patients to specialists when needed for further diagnosis or treatment.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Specific Tasks: The duties include but are not limited to the following:
Examines, diagnoses, and treats diseases and injuries of the foot and ankle by surgical and conservative means. The duties include but are not limited to the following:
Provides comprehensive medical and surgical management of disorders of the foot and ankle. This includes examination, diagnosis, medical and surgical treatment, prevention, and care of conditions/functions of the foot, ankle, and related structures.
Examines, diagnoses, and treats diseases and injuries of the foot by operative and non-operative means.
Prepares and reviews case histories and obtains data through interviews.
Examines patients and determines which x-ray examinations and clinical laboratory tests are required.
Interprets test results and evaluates examination findings.
Determines procedures for preoperative and postoperative care and prescribes orthotics.
Performs surgical procedures and coordinates care with civilian anesthesia providers and hospitals.
Reduces and immobilizes fractures by open or closed methods, using such corrective devices as braces, casts, splints, and surgical implants.
Administers and prescribes antibiotics, anti-inflammatory, pain, and other medications.
Directs nurses in procedures for preoperative and postoperative care and operating room techniques.
Advises on kind and quantity of podiatric supplies and equipment.
Coordinates podiatric services with other medical activities.
Serves as consultant to MTF staff on podiatric conditions.
Completes appropriate military specific documentation such as (but not limited to) narrative medical summaries, convalescent leave and duty limiting conditions (medical profile) paperwork.
Maintain knowledge of computer operations in the use of basic word processing, data entry and automated medical records.
Under the direction of the MTF, the Provider may perform duties at Memorial Hospitals and the Penrose St Francis Health Care System.

JOB REQUIREMENTS *

Qualifications:

Education: Successfully completed a doctor of podiatric medicine (4-year DPM degree) from and accredited college or university of podiatric medicine.
Post-Graduate Training: Successfully completed a 24-months of podiatric surgical residency required.
Specialty Board Certification: Maintains a current or is board eligible for American Board of Podiatric Surgery or American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine Board certification.
Licensure: Must possess and maintain an active, current, valid and unrestricted license from a US jurisdiction (fifty States, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam or the U.S. Virgin Islands) to practice independently within the defined scope of practice for their specialty. Non-personal services contract personnel must be licensed in the jurisdiction in which the MTF is located.
Experience/Clinical Competency: Must have a minimum of 24 months in the last 36 months of documented current clinical independent experience and competency. Must have the level of experience and documented current clinical competency to be awarded “Regular” privileges to work independently. Podiatry Surgical Activity Logs for the last 24 months are required to be submitted for validation of demonstrated current clinical competency when the provider is being submitted for the initial review of their Curriculum Vitae.
Health Status: Must be able to safely execute the responsibilities of their specialty in providing health care. Has no medical or mental condition that prevents or that significantly reduces an individual’s ability to safely execute their approved scope of practice in providing health care. This includes alcohol or drug abuse, or mental health disorder not responsive to treatment.
Advanced Life Support Certifications: Must possess and maintains current Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support. If applicable, maintains current Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support.
Professional Behavior/Conduct: Must not have any reported allegations of misconduct to external regulatory agencies where there is reasonable cause (such as an arrest) that could have a serious impact on patient/staff welfare or safety.

Scope of Practice:

The scope of privileges in podiatry includes prevention, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, education, and consultation to patients of all ages with disorders, diseases and injuries of the foot and ankle. Podiatrists provide medical and surgical care for a wide variety of foot, and ankle conditions, including complex disorders and injuries, trauma, and congenital abnormalities. They are also qualified to detect the early stages of systemic diseases that exhibit warning signs in the lower extremities, as well as other foot conditions that can threaten a patient's overall health. Podiatrists may perform full pre-operative histories and physical exams and may admit to the facility in accordance with MTF policy.
Works under general supervision of the Chief, Podiatry who discusses policies and objectives. There is no direct supervision, and the individual exercises independent judgment in selection and performance of the full range of diagnostic evaluations for patients.
Participates in established peer (other medical specialist) review process monthly. Provides chart review for quality assurance purposes in the area of neurology if requested on an occasional basis.
Attend and participate in patient care reports, patient care conferences, team conferences, professional staff conferences and other appropriate professional activities only to the extent that such attendance and participation is relative to his/her assigned cases and/or performance of services as determined by the supervisor.

Physical Demands:
Position consists of sitting for long periods of time, using hands/fingers, handling, reaching with hands and arms, speaking or translating. Periods of walking, standing, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and lifting boxes weighing up to 30 pounds. Moderate to extended periods of office work with heavy periods of computer usage. May be assigned occasional to moderate periods of analytical tasks requiring extensive reasoning abilities. It is Katmai’s business philosophy and practice to provide reasonable accommodations, according to applicable state and federal laws, to all qualified individuals with physical or mental disabilities.
Work Environment:
Work is performed primarily indoors at a well-lit military treatment facility such as a clinic, outpatient facility or hospital. The environment is normally air conditioned, but conditions may change dependent upon circumstances. Work may need to be performed in a fast-paced environment requiring quick thinking and rapid judgements. Employee will be exposed to a wide variety of clients in differing functions, personalities and abilities. Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and bodily fluids, latex, radiation or other contaminants and safety issues. May be exposed to infection or diseases from contact with patients. Work is highly social with patients and can be stressful with a high emotional element. Decisions made may substantially impact patients and their families.
Work Schedule:
40 hours per week with occasional overtime and travel between on-site base clinics. The Health Care Provider (HCP) shall be available and required to work additional clinic hours as deemed necessary for adequate deliverable care of services.

CSS Compensation and Benefits package:

Pay Range: $100/hr
Eligible Benefits: No Benefits.
This position is an independent contractor and NOT an employee position.
