Full Job Description

Banning Lewis Ranch Academy is a tuition-free public charter school authorized by District 49, proudly serving the Banning Lewis Ranch community and surrounding neighborhoods in north eastern Colorado Springs since 2006.

Our mission is to create a safe, supportive environment where students thrive academically and develop the skills, character, and mindset to engage with the world.

Position Overview:

Banning Lewis Ranch Academy is seeking a dynamic and engaging Elementary Music Teacher to design and deliver meaningful music education experiences for students in grades K–5. This role fosters creativity, expression, and appreciation of music while building foundational skills in rhythm, melody, performance, and collaboration.

The Music Teacher will lead a specials rotation class, contribute to school culture through performances and events, and create opportunities for students to develop confidence, discipline, and joy through music.

Core Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Music Instruction & Student Learning

Design and deliver standards-aligned music instruction for K–5 students
Teach foundational music concepts including rhythm, melody, tempo, dynamics, and expression
Provide opportunities for singing, movement, instrument use, and creative expression
Foster student confidence, collaboration, and performance skills
Differentiate instruction to meet diverse student needs and abilities

Performance & School Culture

Plan and lead student performances, concerts, and showcases throughout the school year
Support school events and assemblies through music and student participation
Create opportunities for students to demonstrate learning and celebrate growth
Contribute to a positive school culture by incorporating music into the broader school experience

Creative Expression & Real-World Connections

Encourage creativity through composition, improvisation, and performance
Expose students to a variety of musical genres, cultures, and styles
Connect music learning to real-world applications and artistic expression
Create engaging, hands-on experiences that foster a lifelong appreciation for music

Real-World Connections & Career Exploration

Introduce students to a variety of music-related careers (e.g., performer, composer, producer, sound engineer, music teacher, conductor)
Connect classroom learning to real-world applications such as live performance, recording, and media production
Provide opportunities for students to explore roles within a performance setting (e.g., performer, stage crew, announcer, organizer)
Incorporate basic exposure to music technology, including recording tools or digital composition platforms when appropriate
Highlight how music connects to other industries such as film, advertising, gaming, and digital media
Invite guest speakers, virtual experiences, or examples from professionals in the music industry when possible
Create performance opportunities that mirror authentic experiences (concerts, showcases, assemblies)
Help students understand how collaboration, practice, and feedback are essential skills in both music and real-world careers

Collaboration & Professional Practice

Partner with Specials teammates, grade-level teams, and instructional leaders
Support cross-curricular connections where appropriate
Maintain a safe, organized, and engaging learning environment
Collaborate with specialists, interventionists, and special education staff to support all learners
Contribute to a positive, solution-oriented staff culture aligned to BLRA’s mission

Family & Community Engagement

Build strong relationships with families and communicate student progress
Support a welcoming and inclusive school community
Engage families through performances, events, and school activities
Participate in family engagement opportunities such as conferences and school events

Commitment to Professional Growth

Seek and implement feedback from school leaders and instructional coaches
Participate in professional development and collaborative learning opportunities
Reflect on instructional practice and continuously improve effectiveness

Certificates, Licenses, & Registrations:

Criminal background check required for hire
Valid Colorado driver’s license required for hire
CPR and First Aid within 6 months of hire
CPI within 6 months of hire

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, climb or balance, push, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds frequently, including pushing a student who uses a wheelchair. Requires a sufficient range of physical strength, endurance, and mobility to assist in the personal care of students.

Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will work primarily in a school environment.

Mental Functions:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate, compare, analyze, coordinate, instruct, evaluate, and use interpersonal skills. Occasionally required to compile, copy, compute and negotiate

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education, Education, or a closely related field
Valid Colorado teaching license (or ability to obtain)
Experience working with elementary-aged students
Strong classroom management and relationship-building skills
Ability to design engaging, developmentally appropriate music instruction
Must successfully complete a background check

Preferred Qualifications

Experience teaching elementary music (general music, choir, or instrumental)
Ability to lead student performances or school-wide programs
Experience integrating movement, instruments, and vocal instruction
Knowledge of K–5 Colorado Academic Standards for Music
Experience incorporating cross-curricular connections into music instruction

Pay: $51,000.00 - $65,000.00 per year
