Job Title: Water/Wastewater Technician
Job Classification: Non-Exempt
Job Reports To: Field Supervisor
Supervises: N/A
SUMMARY:
Perform all operations and maintenance necessary to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the water acquisition and distribution systems and sewage collection system.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensure proper operation of wells and pump houses, including chlorine injection systems;
- Repair and maintain water mains, valves, fire hydrants, sewer mains, manholes and lift stations, as necessary;
- Ensure that safety procedures and equipment are used at all times;
- Ensure that customers are always treated courteously and professionally;
- Perform 24-hour emergency call when scheduled and be prepared to work outside of normal business hours when necessary; and
- Other duties as may be assigned.
DAILY DUTIES:
- Collect data from wells and lift stations and report to Superintendent;
- Daily water turn-on’s, turn-off’s and meter readings for customers; and
- Perform other duties as instructed by Foreman, Superintendent or Manager.
WEEKLY DUTIES:
- Take water samples, as required, well draw down levels and static water levels; and
- Check water valve boxes and sewer manholes for proper operation.
MONTHLY DUTIES:
- Read or re-read residential and commercial water meters; and
- Repair or replace defective meters, repair service line leaks and make repairs to meter pits from monthly meter list or as necessary.
ANNUAL, SEASONAL AND OTHER DUTIES:
- Remove snow from District office sidewalks and parking lot and report/correct any safety issues;
- Mow office lawn and weeds around wellhouses, lift stations, ditches and other District property;
- Raise valves and manholes after street paving;
- Paint and provide seasonal maintenance to wellhouses, lift station buildings and other
District-owned buildings;
- Perform annual testing and maintenance to water valves and fire hydrants according to the District’s maintenance schedule and as assigned; and
- Perform construction work for new mains, valves, hydrants, etc., as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed herein are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
EQUIPMENT USED:
Backhoe, 5-yard dump truck, jet rodder, sewer camera equipment, light truck and other construction equipment as necessary. Must develop working and operational knowledge of water and sanitation systems and equipment.
Shovels, rakes, and other necessary hand-tools needed for the excavation and repair of water and sewer mains and appurtenances.
Desktop and/or laptop/notebook computer with email, Microsoft Office software, writing utensils, calculator, desk calendar/appointment book or scheduling software and cell phone/telephone with voicemail.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memorandums.
Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers and other employees.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving few concrete variables in standardized situations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s.
Ability to perform these operations using units weight measurement, volume and distance.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or general education degree.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:
- Colorado Commercial Driver’s license (Class A or Class B) required;
- Class D Water Treatment Plant Operator and Class I Water Distribution System Operator required within 2 years of date of hire;
- Wastewater Collection System Operators Certifications preferred, but not required.
