Board Member Position Overview

Join a passionate and dedicated creative non-profit organization committed to making a meaningful impact in our storytelling community. As a Board Member, you will play a vital role in guiding the organization’s strategic direction, ensuring sound governance, and fostering sustainable growth. This volunteer leadership position offers an exciting opportunity to leverage your management expertise, strategic vision, and passion for social change to help advance our mission. You will collaborate with fellow board members and senior leadership to develop innovative solutions, oversee operational excellence, and champion the organization’s values. You will a play a pivotal part in leveraging your media expertise to elevate the non-profit's brand storytelling.

Our production company's sister nonprofit believes in increasing access to learning resources to improve the creative flow and opportunity for authentic storytelling. With community assistance, we will help filmmakers create more freely providing access to project resources in a supported, safe environment.

Responsibilities

Provide strategic oversight and governance to ensure the organization fulfills its mission effectively and ethically
Contribute to high-level decision-making on organizational policies, programs, and initiatives
Support financial stewardship through budget review, financial management, and ensuring compliance with fiscal policies
Engage in business development efforts to expand community outreach, partnerships, and funding opportunities
Collaborate across departments to promote cross-functional teamwork and operational efficiency
Participate actively in board meetings, committees, and special projects with a focus on data-driven decision making
Foster team development by mentoring staff leaders and supporting leadership succession planning
Lead negotiations with partners, donors, and stakeholders to strengthen organizational capacity

Qualifications

Proven management experience with a strong background in business management or operational oversight
Demonstrated expertise in financial management, budgeting, and executive-level team leadership
Skilled in strategic planning, process improvement, and project management within complex organizations
Excellent verbal communication skills with executives, stakeholders, and community partners
Experience in business development or fundraising activities is highly desirable
Strong leadership qualities with the ability to inspire teams and drive organizational growth
Ability to analyze data for informed decision making and operational improvements
Prior experience serving on a non-profit or similar governance board is preferred but not required

Job specific responsibilities:

Board Chair

The board chair will oversee the board’s work, makes sure org operations are running smoothly, and facilitates board meetings. The board chair is the primary contact for work with the Executive Director and senior management team, keeping the board informed.

These are some of the primary duties of the Board Chair:

Recommends members for committees and appoints committee chairs
Works in connection with the executive director to prepare board meeting agendas
Arranges for or takes part in new board member orientations
Takes the lead on the executive director’s annual performance evaluation
Assists in recruiting qualified new board member candidates
Serves as the nonprofit’s spokesperson as needed
Takes the lead in the annual board member self-evaluation process

Treasurer

The Board Treasurer position requires someone who has experience in financial accounting for nonprofits. The Treasurer ensures board members can access the financial reports in a timely manner, using a board management software solution.

The Treasurer:

Manages the budget
Takes the lead in the annual audit
Answers questions about the audit
Chairs the finance committee
Partners with the executive director to ensure the financial reports are continually updated

Secretary

The Board Secretary’s duties help run in-house operations and protect a nonprofit organization. Board secretaries have a variety of duties and responsibilities including:

Schedules board meetings
Assists in board member orientation
Takes attendance at board meetings
Takes accurate meeting minutes and getting them approved
Maintains board records
Ensures secure storage of official board documents and contracts
Tracks board member terms
Monitors legal compliance

Compensation:

Board Members receive full reimbursement on any org related expenses
After 180 days, are eligible to begin a monetary compensation agreement. This agreement is tailored to typical compensation for board member positions, which does not equate to a traditional salary.
Full access to company equipment and locations.
