Gehring Underground is seeking an experienced and hands-on Fleet Maintenance Manager / Shop Lead to oversee the maintenance, repair, and operational readiness of our fleet of trucks, trailers, and construction equipment. This position is ideal for a highly skilled diesel or equipment technician who has demonstrated leadership abilities and is ready to lead a maintenance operation while remaining actively involved in repairs and troubleshooting.
Our fleet consists primarily of Ford and International trucks, along with Kubota and Vermeer construction equipment. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing fleet maintenance activities, coordinating repairs, minimizing downtime, and ensuring equipment is safe, compliant, and available to meet operational demands.
This is a working management position. The Fleet Maintenance Manager will be expected to perform diagnostics, repairs, and maintenance alongside technicians when required.
Job Purpose
Lead and manage all fleet maintenance operations while ensuring trucks, trailers, and equipment are maintained safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively to support company operations.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate all fleet maintenance and repair activities.
- Lead, train, and support shop personnel while promoting a productive team environment.
- Perform diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs on trucks, trailers, and equipment as needed.
- Develop and manage preventative maintenance schedules.
- Prioritize and assign repair work to minimize equipment downtime.
- Monitor fleet condition and identify equipment replacement or major repair needs.
- Ensure compliance with DOT regulations, safety standards, and company policies.
- Maintain repair records, maintenance schedules, inspection reports, and equipment history.
- Coordinate outside vendor repairs and warranty work when necessary.
- Manage inventory of parts, tools, and shop supplies.
- Respond to emergency breakdowns and road calls when required.
- Participate in budgeting and cost control efforts related to fleet maintenance.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Extensive knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, trailers, and construction equipment.
- Advanced troubleshooting and diagnostic abilities.
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to prioritize multiple projects and manage competing demands.
- Knowledge of preventative maintenance programs and fleet management best practices.
- Working knowledge of DOT regulations and vehicle compliance requirements.
- Ability to read and understand service manuals, technical documentation, and diagnostic reports.
- Ability to work safely and effectively in varying weather conditions.
- Ability to lift, carry, and perform physically demanding work when necessary
- Must possess personal mechanic tools; specialized equipment will be provided
Minimum Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Five or more years of fleet, diesel, heavy truck, or equipment maintenance experience required.
- Previous supervisory, lead technician, or shop management experience strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated experience diagnosing and repairing diesel trucks and construction equipment.
- Ability to pass background checks and drug screening.
Certifications/Licenses
- Valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Gehring Underground, Inc.
- CDL Class A preferred.
- CDL Class A not required at hire but participation in the company's CDL program to obtain one will be required.
Pay: $30.00 - $40.00 per hour
