Wanted: IT Wizard, Intern Class. Muggles Need Not Apply.
Sabre IT | Columbus, OH | Paid Internship | $15/hr to start, $16/hr after your first 60 days | 24-32 hrs/week | In office
That got your attention!
But read this first: Friday is a required workday. Not negotiable, not flexible. It's half the reason this position exists. If Fridays don't work for you, let's save us both a click right now.
Still here? Excellent. Let's talk. (Also, there's an escape room in the interview process. I'm not kidding. We'll get to that.)
Hi, I'm Jake
I run Sabre IT, and I've been doing this technology thing since I was old enough to run my first lemonade stand. I started the company right out of high school in 2002, and today over 100 Columbus businesses in healthcare, finance, title, and manufacturing trust us with the stuff that absolutely cannot break.
Technology is my love language. I absolutely love IT. (See what I did there?)
All kidding aside: we're growing, and I need help. Our last intern just got promoted to run our front line, which means his old seat is open, and I'd rather fill it with the right human than the fast one.
The End-All/Be-All Overvalued Title
I don't like titles. Never believed in them. But if I had to write one for this position, it would be something like: on-bench, occasionally-brilliant, ticket-crushing, machine-imaging, patch-deploying, note-taking, remote-session-driving, elite-keyboard-shortcut-using, future IT guru with a sense of humor and a documented allergy to cutting corners.
That's not it, but I'm getting close. [Creed Bratton]
The actual job
You'll be our bench tech. After a real training and shadowing ramp (weeks of it, not a YouTube playlist), you'll work real tickets for real businesses: remote support sessions, imaging and deploying machines, onboarding new users, patching, and writing things down like your future self depends on it. Because they do.
What you will NOT do at first: answer client phones. You'll earn those reps over time, starting small. What you will NEVER do: work a weekend. We don't do weekends. Ever.
The part where I'm weirdly honest
$15/hour to start. Pass your 60-day probation and it's $16. That raise date gets circled on a calendar on day one, not dangled like a carrot on a corporate stick.
W-2, because the IRS insists on being part of our relationship. (Don't get me started.)
24 to 32 hours a week, flexible around your class schedule. Except Friday. Friday is sacred.
We don't offer health insurance right now. I'm telling you up front because I'd rather lose an applicant than surprise an employee. To be unclear is to be unkind.
About our clients (we love them)
Our clients energize us, invest in their businesses, and treat our people like people. Clients will NOT disrespect or yell at you. I don't tolerate it. The client is NOT always right, and I've fired every client who thought otherwise. All the lemons are gone, so you'll need to bring your own. We have a fridge in the back.
The Jack story (why this beats a big-shop helpdesk queue)
Our last intern shadowed us for three days, asked for a job on the spot, and within a year was running a full breach investigation for a client that got hacked. That's not a recruiting story. That's just Jack, and he'll be the one training you. Everyone here has a written growth path: what the next step is, what it takes, and when it can happen. No guessing. No "we'll see."
You'll touch the entire stack: Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, real security tooling and EDR, Windows AND Mac management, UniFi networking, backup and disaster recovery, and the ticketing systems that hold it all together. A year here will show you more than three years of pushing password resets into the void.
Let's find out if you're 'the one'
Signs you might be a fit:
1. You're a hard-charging rhinoceros
2. You're already the family IT department, and you secretly like it
3. You've built a homelab, or broken one and learned why
4. You really like printers! (just kidding, nobody likes printers)
5. You write things down without being told
6. You love asking questions almost as much as answering them
7. You put the word RHINO at the top of your application
8. You show up when you say you will
9. You can stay kind with someone having the worst tech day of their month
10. You bring new ideas to the table
11. You intellectually grasp the concept of work-hard/play-hard
(There's my 10-point list. #4 didn't count.)
A little bit about me
Since we'll be spending a LOT of time together, let me break this down. I'm an entrepreneur. I'm a husband. I'm a father to 2 great kids. This business is also my baby. I love my family, my friends, working hard, playing hard, capitalism, guns, going on vacation, constitutional rights, my Savior: Jesus Christ, all things technology, Dave Ramsey, EntreLeadership, my customers, my vendors, my team, my two cats, Sonic the Hedgehog, and (new to the portfolio) AI that actually does useful work. Those were not listed in order of importance.
Personality-style conflict warning
There are thousands of applicants out there, but only one perfect fit. If you resonate with me and how we run things, awesome. If not, you may or may not (but abso-definitely WILL) find it difficult to work here. I make no apologies. I am who I am, you are who you are. Please rule yourself out accordingly. It's not my intention to make anyone's life harder, and let's be honest, you'd probably drive me nuts too. It is what it is.
How this goes (yes, there's really an escape room)
1. Short application. Takes minutes. Curiosity mandatory.
2. Two quick virtual interviews, on your own schedule. The first is about who you are and why you actually like this stuff. No trick questions, no "where do you see yourself in five years." The second is about what you know: what you've built, what you've broken, what you fixed at 2am, and what you want to learn next. Be honest. We can tell.
3. Paid lunch and an escape room. Yes, really. We buy you lunch, then we lock ourselves in a room with you and find out who you become when a countdown timer is running. Do you communicate? Do you freeze? Do you laugh? Best interview question we've ever asked, and it isn't even a question. Lunch is on us and so is the room. This is an interview, not a shift, so there's no timeclock. Just show up hungry and bring your brain.
4. The mock ticket. Back at our office, we hand you a realistic problem inside a real ticket and watch how you work it. Fair warning: at some point, "the client" is going to call, and the client is going to be having A Day. Stay kind, stay calm, talk them through it. That's the job, and we'd both rather find out now.
5. A PAID shadow day. Before anyone signs anything, you spend a paid day alongside us seeing how we actually work. You see the real us, we see the real you, and nobody commits blind. This is literally how Jack got hired. He shadowed for three days and then asked for the job. No pressure.
The pitch
I'm not looking for a cow. I need a baby rhino I can raise into a full one. If you want a start in IT that doesn't bore the crap out of you, a written path instead of a dangled maybe, and a leader who respects you and your effort, then reach out. I may have a little something for you.
Columbus, OH. In office. Start date: late August. Work hard, play hard. Bring curiosity.
