General Information

POSITION TITLE: Behavior Specialist

REPORTS TO: Mental Health Clinical Supervisor; Director(s); Clinical Supervisor(s); Behavior Analyst/Behavior Consultant; Other managers as directed.

POSITIONS SUPERVISED: None

FLSA STATUS: Non-exempt

PURPOSE: The Behavior Specialist position is a specialized role available in our intervention center who works with our clients that have more challenging behaviors, completes case management for clients on their caseload, and trains new staff. This position is best for a detail-oriented person who loves to collaborate with others, can implement clinician developed behavior support plans with fidelity, collect and document daily data, complete daily progress notes, and provide data to clinicians at case review meetings.

EDUCATION REQUIRED: Must hold a bachelor's degree and/or 3 years of related experience required.

CREDENTIALS REQUIRED: None

PRODUCTIVITY REQUIREMENT: 1,200 hours per year (12 months)

Follow all legal and licensing board requirements and ethical standards
Follow state, federal, and local law as they pertain to job duties and execution
Keep all client information confidential

Recruit, interview, recommend candidates for hire
Supervise, mentor, and lead staff; document progress and produce reports
Train new staff and provide ongoing training for existing staff
Evaluate, reprimand, and in conjunction with Human Resources, terminate staff
Model professional behavior and decorum
Work collaboratively with management team
Work effectively with employees and customers who may be upset or unreasonable
Set and achieve goals and initiate professional development
Assist leadership in strategic plan development and progress for agency

Specific Duties, Competencies, Responsibilities, and Behaviors

Work 1:1 consistently with clients that have more challenging behaviors for up to 6 hours per day (specifics)
Maintains professional composure during behavioral situations and utilizes rational detachment strategies to support client safety and treatment integrity (i.e., does not react or show they are scared)
Accepts and implements supervisory feedback professionally (i.e., positively) and within expected timelines
Implements feedback immediately, correctly and consistently
Independently adjust support strategies based on the individual's needs, including building rapport, gradually increasing skill acquisition expectations, and using cues to support learning opportunities.
Follow individualized support plans with minimal guidance from the client’s program manager and implement support strategies consistently and accurately.
Demonstrate adaptability to new clients, new recommendations, and environmental changes
Treatment Room Organization: QBHS sets up the treatment area/room such as instructor space independent area and instructional area.
Follows each individual's therapy schedule and assists with prompting group and peer activities
Safety: Maintains proper supervision of children within care at all times. Maintains a safe environment for clients by ensuring children do not have access to anything that could harm or injure them. Client health and hygiene are top priority as well as teaching self help/adaptive skills.
Works to create an environment that promotes skills acquisition through client interests
Implements Communication Skill Development
Engagement: Has a medium to high level of engagement with clients captures their motivation in order to increase skill development at a high frequency
Behavior Support Plan Implementation: Relationship building, rational detachment and demonstrates professionalism, compassionate care and cultural competence.
Administrative Responsibilities: Maintains professionalism and protects individual privacy when discussing those we serve. Completes required documentation, daily checklists, and progress reports accurately and on time. Prepares materials for daily activities, documents services provided, and communicates with supervisors when guidance or support is needed.

Professionalism: Recognizes potential problems, presents them professionally, and suggests appropriate solutions, follows Behavior Specialist and all staff policies and procedures. Creates a positive working environment for all staff.
Demonstrates flexibility with client assignments and scheduling needs while communicating concerns through appropriate procedures (i.e., does not request frequent schedule/client changes)
Is flexible across a wide variety of situations for administrative needs to working with the client

Does not respond emotionally to behavior episodes verbally or through body language or other non verbal communication

Remains calm during behavior episodes and doesn’t give off that they are nervous or scared to other staff or the client

Picks up on instructor principles and procedures quickly and with minimal modeling and training

Is adaptable to new kids, new recommendations and environmental changes

Does not request schedule changes

Complete all training, education, and development activities as required
Demonstrate accurate implementation of clinical and other competencies specific to the position
Provide behavioral health services following the client’s treatment plan, and as qualified to do so, including but not limited to CPST and/or TBS services
Complete data collection in the outlined procedure, Central Reach notes and data collection, and communication of client progress or lack thereof following internal procedures (e.g., Behavior Data, progress note documentation, walkie procedures, Q/A systems, troubleshooting forms, etc.)
Monitor and report progress on designated clients toward their ISP/ITP and/or Treatment Plan objectives and goals to the supervisor
Work collaboratively within a treatment team; implement feedback as directed

Change diapers and provides toilet training; run after children that have eloped from treatment area, get up and down from ground when needed
Participate in staff development, education and training
Seek, receive and apply feedback appropriately and professionally
Meet productivity requirements
Model professional behavior and decorum such as treat staff and clients professionally; uses professional language when discussing
Prepare for sessions prior to session start time
Prepare and maintain “mix and vary” boxes and associated materials including but not limited to promptly adding newly-mastered target materials
Identify and report to supervisors when interventions are needed for specific clients and client treatment and/or education programs
Substitute at any given time for other staff to work with clients potentially not on regular schedules
Staff member remain on task throughout their session (i.e., not consistently leaving the room, not on their phone/computers, ear buds put away etc.)
