Full Job Description

General Description and Qualifications

The Grove City Parks and Recreation Department is currently seeking a Center Assistant to join its dynamic recreation team at the Evans Center. The Evans Center promotes independence, physical and mental health, community involvement, and social interaction to the 55+ community and offers a wide range of activities including performing arts, Parks and Recreation classes, trips to local entertainment destinations, support groups, health fairs, and seminars. This is a part-time position in support of daytime and evening activities.

The Evans Center Assistant, under the immediate supervision of the Recreation Supervisor, is responsible for assisting with activities, classes, and events in support of Parks & Recreation facilities and programs of the Evans Center.

The ideal candidate possesses the following qualifications:

Is at least 18 years of age and has a high school diploma or equivalent.
Has the ability to follow all rules, regulations and ethical conduct as set forth by the Grove City Parks and Recreation Department and the City of Grove City.
Has the ability to demonstrate good public relations when dealing with participants, the general public, and other city employees, while positively encouraging participants’ involvement of offered programs.
Proven ability in written and oral communication.
Skilled in computer operation including Microsoft Office products such as Outlook, Word, and Excel and web-based applications.
The City of Grove City is a Drug Free Workplace. All candidates who receive an offer of employment will be required to undergo testing for commonly used drugs, including marijuana.

Job Type: Part-time, up to 28 hours per week.
Schedule: The Evans Center is open Monday-Friday for daytime and evening activities.
Starting Pay: $17.85 per hour

Essential Functions of the Position

The Evans Center Assistant shall have the following duties under their immediate supervisor:

Acts as a point of public contact during facility usage, programs, activities, special events, or other Parks and Recreation and city supported activities.
Assists in completing and collecting necessary forms and records including participant registration, emergency information cards, rosters, maintenance requests, incident reports, maintain daily reports, monthly reports, prepares written reports, answer telephones, takes messages, direct calls, and provides information to others. Makes photocopies, and processes routine documents and forms.
Calculates participant fees, registers participants, and collects fees in conjunction to program delivery, instructional classes or other activities adhering to all city policies and procedures.
Coordinates and assists with setup, room prep, and clean up before and after classes/activities in conjunction with facility usage, classes, meetings, programs, and/or other events.
Assists supervisory staff with organizing, promoting, and conducting diversified recreation activities.
Addresses participant concerns and assists with day-to-day program operation.
Performs tasks as needed such as wiping off tables, cleaning kitchen appliances/equipment, wiping up spills, sweeping and picking up trash etc.
Inventories and issues supplies and equipment and maintains proper storage.
Serves as liaison between the Parks and Recreation Supervisor and activity instructors.
Demonstrates regular attendance.
Obeys and promptly executes all orders of the Administrative Assistant.
Performs other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.

Working Conditions and Equipment Operated

The employee has exposure to chemical compounds found in an office environment (e.g., toner, correction fluid, etc.); ascends and/or descends stairs; has contact with potentially violent or emotionally distraught persons; regularly required to lift, carry, push, or pull objects 30 lbs or less.

Note: In accordance with the U.S. Department of Labor physical demands strength ratings, this is considered light work.

Minimum Acceptable Characteristics, Licensure and/or Certification

Knowledge of: office practices and procedures; English grammar and spelling; records management; *City/department goals and objectives; *City/department policies and procedures; *workplace safety practices and procedures; *personnel rules and regulations; public relations.

Skill in: typing; word processing; computer operation; calculator operation; use of modem office equipment; use of telephone/mobile phone.

Ability to: carry out simple instructions; carry out instructions in basic written, oral, or picture form; interpret a variety of instructions in basic written, oral, picture, or schedule form; deal with problems involving several variables within a familiar context; read, copy, and record figures accurately; complete routine forms; prepare routine correspondence; prepare accurate documentation; compile and prepare reports; respond to routine inquiries from public and/or officials; communicate effectively; instruct others; understand a variety of written and/or verbal communications; arrange items in numerical or alphabetical order; sort items into categories according to established methods; *maintain records according to established procedures; work alone on most tasks; answer routine telephone inquiries; develop and maintain effective working relationships; demonstrate manual dexterity; travel to and gain access to work site.
