Digital Operating Model & Technology Maturity Assessment with Lean Tree

The Opportunity

Lean Tree is supporting a leading North American retailer with a rapid executive assessment of its Digital Operating Model, with particular emphasis on Front-End Engineering, storefront quality and engineering maturity.

We're looking for a highly experienced Design & UX Lead, based in the US, to join a small senior assessment team for an initial 5½-week engagement beginning in late August.

The engagement offers the opportunity to influence the future direction of a major retail organisation ahead of significant technology investment. Subject to the outcome of the assessment, there is a strong expectation that the work will progress into targeted Phase 2 deep dives during Q4, followed by a broader transformation programme from 2027 onwards.

Role Purpose:

You will lead the assessment of the client's Design capability, including:

Design organisation structure, leadership and operating model
UX and Product Design maturity
Design Systems strategy, governance and adoption
Design-to-engineering collaboration
Design quality, accessibility and customer experience
Design ways of working and cross-functional collaboration

Working alongside a small team of senior consultants, you will engage executive stakeholders, facilitate workshops, review organisational capability and synthesise findings into clear, practical recommendations for senior leadership.

Experience

Significant experience leading Design and UX organisations within large retail or consumer businesses
Strong knowledge of Design Systems and modern digital product organisations
Experience conducting assessments, audits or transformation engagements
Excellent executive communication and stakeholder engagement skills
A collaborative consulting style and the ability to translate complex findings into practical business recommendations
Consultancy experience would be advantageous
