The Excavator / Finish Dozer Operator performs a variety of earthmoving, grading, excavation, remediation, and site development activities under general supervision. This position is responsible for safely and efficiently operating excavators, dozers, and other heavy equipment to support environmental remediation, construction, demolition, utility, and site restoration projects in accordance with established company policies, client requirements, and safety procedures.
- Follow all applicable safety rules, regulations, company policies, site-specific safety plans, and client requirements.
- Safely operate excavators, finish dozers, and other assigned heavy equipment in support of environmental and construction activities.
- Perform precision grading and final site preparation to specification using GPS, laser, or conventional grade control methods.
- Excavate, load, backfill, trench, grade, and contour soils and materials according to project requirements.
- Support environmental remediation projects including contaminated soil excavation, waste loading, and material segregation.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of equipment and complete required inspection documentation.
- Perform routine maintenance including fueling, greasing, fluid checks, cleaning, and minor adjustments.
- Identify and report mechanical issues, equipment damage, and unsafe conditions to supervision.
- Load and unload equipment from trailers when qualified and authorized.
- Read and interpret site plans, grade stakes, utility locates, and project drawings.
- Maintain awareness of underground utilities, overhead hazards, and adjacent work activities during operations.
- Work effectively with field crews, project managers, and site supervisors to complete projects safely and efficiently.
- Complete required paperwork, daily reports, equipment logs, and time records.
- Assist with labor activities as needed to support field operations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In addition to normal business hours, work schedules may include overtime, after-hours work, weekends, and emergency response activities as needed. Frequent outdoor work is required in varying weather conditions including extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, and humidity.
This position routinely works on active remediation, industrial, construction, demolition, and emergency response sites. Employees must be willing and able to wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including hard hats, safety glasses, steel-toe boots, high-visibility clothing, hearing protection, gloves, and respiratory protection when required.
Frequent travel and overnight stays may be required depending on project location.
- Demonstrated ability to safely and efficiently operate excavators, finish dozers, and related heavy equipment.
- Understanding of grading techniques, slope control, site drainage, and finish grading requirements.
- Ability to read grade stakes, blueprints, excavation plans, and utility markings.
- Knowledge of heavy equipment operating characteristics and safe excavation practices.
- Ability to identify safety hazards and take corrective action.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
- Ability to interpret and follow written and oral instructions.
- Must maintain a professional attitude and commitment to safety and quality.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Minimum 2 years of excavator and/or dozer operating experience preferred.
- Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record required.
- Ability to pass pre-employment screening requirements.
- OSHA 10-Hour, OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER, or equivalent training preferred.
- Experience performing environmental remediation, utility, site development, landfill, or civil construction work preferred.
- Frequently climb on and off heavy equipment.
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel, and climb for extended periods.
- Ability to work on uneven terrain and active construction sites.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Ability to safely enter and exit equipment multiple times throughout the workday.
- Must possess adequate vision and hearing to safely operate equipment and recognize hazards.
- OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER
- OSHA 10-Hour or 30-Hour Construction
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
- First Aid / CPR Certification
- GPS Machine Control Experience (Topcon, Trimble, Leica, etc.)
- Experience with environmental remediation and contaminated soil excavation
Pay: $28.00 - $36.00 per hour
