Full Job Description

Job Overview
The Residential Nurse at The Nutter Center for Empowering Women provides comprehensive nursing care to adolescent females (ages 12-17) and transitional-age young adult women (ages 18-21) in a Qualified Residential Treatment Program (QRTP). The nurse ensures the health, safety, and well-being of residents by administering medications, monitoring medical conditions, providing health education, and collaborating with the interdisciplinary team to address both acute and chronic health needs. The Residential Nurse also plays a vital role in crisis intervention, medication management, and supporting the facility’s overall treatment goals.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Medical Care and Assessment:

Perform initial health assessments for all residents upon admission, including physical exams, medical history reviews, and development of individualized health care plans.
Conduct ongoing assessments to monitor residents’ physical and mental health, addressing any emerging health concerns promptly.
Administer routine and emergency medical care, including first aid, wound care, and management of chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, or seizures.
Collaborate with the facility’s Medical Director and other health care professionals to manage complex medical cases and ensure continuity of care.

2. Medication Management:

Administer prescribed medications, including oral, injectable, and topical medications, in accordance with facility policies and OhioMHAS regulations.
Maintain accurate medication administration records and ensure that all medications are stored securely.
Monitor residents for side effects or adverse reactions to medications and report concerns to the prescribing physician.
Educate residents on proper medication use, including understanding the purpose, dosage, and potential side effects of prescribed medications.

3. Health Education and Wellness Promotion:

Provide health education to residents, focusing on topics such as nutrition, hygiene, sexual health, and chronic disease management.
Promote a healthy lifestyle by encouraging physical activity, proper nutrition, and self-care practices among residents.
Facilitate group health education sessions on relevant health topics, tailored to the needs of adolescents and young adult women.

4. Crisis Intervention and Emergency Response:

Respond to medical emergencies and crises, providing appropriate medical intervention, including CPR and first aid, as necessary.
Work with the clinical team during behavioral or emotional crises, providing medical support when needed.
Coordinate hospital transfers or emergency care when residents require off-site medical services, and communicate with external medical providers to ensure continuity of care.

5. Collaboration and Care Coordination:

Serve as the primary health liaison between the facility, residents’ families, and external healthcare providers, ensuring that all parties are informed of residents' health conditions and treatment plans.
Participate in multidisciplinary treatment team meetings to discuss resident progress, health concerns, and treatment planning, ensuring that health issues are integrated into the overall care plan.
Work closely with case managers, therapists, and direct care staff to support residents' overall health and wellness as part of their treatment goals.

6. Documentation and Compliance:

Maintain accurate, timely, and detailed documentation of all medical assessments, treatments, and medication administration in the resident’s health records.
Ensure compliance with OhioMHAS standards, state nursing regulations, and QRTP guidelines in all aspects of medical care.
Monitor and ensure that all health records and medication documentation are up to date and ready for audits or inspections.
Report any serious health incidents or safety concerns to the Clinical Director, Medical Director, or appropriate regulatory bodies as required by state law.

7. Training and Supervision:

Provide training to direct care staff on medication administration, basic first aid, and other health-related issues.
Ensure that staff members are aware of residents' specific health needs and understand how to respond to medical emergencies.
Assist in the development of health-related policies and procedures for the facility.

8. Infection Control and Health Safety:

Monitor for and address any potential infection control issues within the facility, following CDC guidelines and facility protocols.
Provide health screenings during outbreaks of contagious illnesses, such as flu or COVID-19, and implement appropriate quarantine or isolation procedures.
Educate residents and staff on infection control measures, including hand hygiene, respiratory etiquette, and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Qualifications:

Education and Licensure:

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with an active, unencumbered license in the state of Ohio.
CPR/BLS certification is required; ACLS certification is preferred.

Experience and Skills:

Minimum 2 years of nursing experience, preferably in adolescent health, behavioral health, or residential care settings.
Experience working with adolescents and young adults who have experienced trauma, mental health disorders, substance use issues, or behavioral challenges.
Strong clinical skills in assessment, medication administration, and crisis management.
Knowledge of trauma-informed care principles and experience working with youth who have a history of complex trauma.
Proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems and ability to maintain accurate and timely health documentation.

Compassionate, patient, and able to build trust and rapport with adolescents and young adults.
Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to handle medical crises calmly and effectively, with strong decision-making skills.
Culturally competent, with the ability to work with diverse populations, including residents from various racial, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds.

Work Environment:

The Residential Nurse will work in a Class 1 Residential Facility (QRTP) that serves adolescent females and transitional-age young adult women. The position requires regular interaction with residents in a therapeutic, structured environment, which may include responding to medical emergencies.
The work environment may involve exposure to behavioral challenges and crises related to trauma, mental health, or substance use disorders.

Physical Demands:

The role requires the ability to lift medical equipment, stand for extended periods, and respond quickly to medical emergencies.
The nurse may be required to assist residents in activities of daily living (ADLs), such as hygiene, nutrition, and ambulation, when necessary.
