Lactation Support Specialist (Breastfeeding Educator)

Our mission is to empower mothers, particularly those from underserved communities, with evidence-based guidance to support maternal and infant health through the promotion of human milk.
Position Summary
The Lactation Support Specialist (Breastfeeding Educator) is responsible for recruiting and engaging participants in Project Milk Mission’s breastfeeding programs and helping ensure equitable access to breastfeeding education and support.
This position facilitates breastfeeding education classes and support groups, enrolls participants, tracks program outcomes, schedules program activities, conducts community outreach, and connects families with community resources.
This is a full-time remote position; however, travel throughout Franklin County, including Columbus, is required to attend community events and facilitate in-person breastfeeding classes and support groups.
Key Responsibilities:
Participant Enrollment and Engagement
- Recruit and enroll pregnant and postpartum mothers in Project Milk Mission programs.
- Maintain ongoing communication with participants to encourage engagement.
- Assist participants with program registration and onboarding.
- Maintain accurate and confidential participant records.
Breastfeeding Education and Support
- Facilitate virtual and in-person breastfeeding education classes and breastfeeding support groups.
- Provide one-on-one breastfeeding education and support to participants.
- Support participants throughout pregnancy and the postpartum period.
- Provide evidence-based and culturally responsive breastfeeding information.
Participant Tracking and Program Coordination
- Maintain and update participant tracking spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel.
- Track participant enrollment, attendance, and program engagement.
- Monitor and document breastfeeding initiation and duration.
- Assist with scheduling breastfeeding classes and support groups.
- Maintain organized records to support program reporting and evaluation.
- Ensure program data is accurate and complete for grant reporting.
Community Outreach
- Attend community outreach events, health fairs, partner meetings, and other activities throughout Franklin County.
- Promote Project Milk Mission’s programs and services.
- Build relationships with community partners and referral sources.
- Distribute program information and assist interested families with enrollment.
Resource Coordination
- Connect participants with community resources and support services.
- Assist participants with accessing additional support when needed.
- Maintain awareness of maternal and infant health resources available in Franklin County.
Minimum Qualifications
- Certification as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC), Certified Lactation Specialist (CLS), Certified Breastfeeding Counselor (CBC) or a similar lactation-related credential.
- Experience providing breastfeeding education or support.
- Experience in maternal and child health, public health, community health, or a related field.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and the ability to maintain tracking spreadsheets.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment.
- Ability to communicate respectfully with families from diverse backgrounds.
Requirements
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Ability and willingness to travel throughout Franklin County, including Columbus.
- Ability to facilitate in-person classes, support groups, and outreach events.
- Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends.
- Ability to manage participant tracking, scheduling, and documentation.
- Reliable internet access and the ability to conduct virtual classes and meetings.
Schedule
This is a full-time position requiring 30 hours per week. The schedule may include occasional evenings and weekends based on program activities and community-event needs.
