Job Description
Defender Construction is hiring an experienced Mainline Excavation Operator to run the primary excavator on our underground utilities pipe crew.
The Mainline Excavation Operator runs the primary excavator on the pipe crew, digging trench to grade for the installation of storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and waterline systems on commercial and heavy civil sites throughout Delaware and Central Ohio.
The operator is responsible for digging on grade around existing utilities, working in single and double stacked trench boxes, setting structures, and handling material in and out of the trench. This position works in direct coordination with the Pipe Layer, Topman, and Site Foreman, and is accountable for production, grade accuracy, machine care, and the safety of everyone working in and around the excavation.
Responsibilities
- Operate excavators and related heavy equipment to install storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and waterline systems.
- Dig trench to proper line and grade, including digging around existing utilities and working in single and double stacked trench boxes.
- Set and shift trench boxes and shoring systems safely and in the correct sequence.
- Handle, rig, and place pipe, manholes, catch basins, and other structures in and out of the trench.
- Place bedding material and backfill trenches to specification.
- Read and interpret site plans, specifications, and cut sheets to verify depth, slope, and elevation.
- Work in close coordination with the Pipe Layer, Topman, and Site Foreman to keep production moving and the crew protected.
- Load, unload, and move materials and equipment as required by the work.
- Perform daily pre-operation inspections, greasing, fueling, and routine maintenance, and report mechanical issues immediately.
- Operate multiple machine types proficiently as project needs require.
- Follow all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and trench safety requirements at all times.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe jobsite.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Site Foreman.
Qualifications & Skills
- Proven experience operating an excavator on a mainline utility crew installing sanitary sewer, storm sewer, or water main.
- Demonstrated ability to dig to grade, including precision digging around live utilities and in confined trench conditions.
- Experience working in single and double stacked trench boxes and with shoring systems.
- Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, profile sheets, and cut sheets.
- Working understanding of GPS and laser guided grade control systems.
- Proficiency on multiple machine types (excavator, dozer, skid steer, loader) preferred.
- Working knowledge of OSHA workplace safety regulations and best practices, including trench and excavation standards.
- Strong communication with pipe crew members and consistent use of hand signals and spotting practices.
- Commitment to daily machine maintenance and responsible care of company equipment.
- Reliable attendance, with the ability to report on time for early start times and to work overtime and occasional Saturdays as project schedules require.
- Valid driver's license; CDL preferred but not required.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and meet the physical demands of a field role.

Candidates are required to provide professional references and documentation of previous work qualifications as part of the hiring process:
- A minimum of three (3) professional references, including prior supervisors, foremen, or general contractors, with current contact information.
- A summary of relevant prior projects, including project type, scope, machines operated, and the role held on the crew.
- Relevant certifications, if any: licenses, equipment certifications, and safety training (e.g., OSHA 10 or 30, competent person, first aid).
- Verifiable history of excavator operation in underground utilities, site work, or grading and earthwork.
Compensation & Benefits
- Straight hourly rate of $39.00/hr, paid according to Defender's customary payroll practices and subject to deductions and withholding.
- Full-time hours of approximately 40 per week, with overtime and prevailing wage opportunities available as project schedules and contracts require.
- Payroll is processed on a biweekly schedule, with employees paid every second Friday.
- 60-day introductory period. This time allows you to determine if the job is suitable for you and allows management to evaluate your work performance. Upon completion of your first 60 days, you will be eligible for a performance review.

Pay: $30.00 - $40.00 per hour
