GENERAL SUMMARY:
Maintain and support the operations and facility for The Department of Public Works by providing high quality and cost-effective maintenance of the city fleet and facilities. The public works mechanic is responsible for the preventive maintenance, performs advanced diagnostics, and makes complex repairs on equipment in the safest, most effective way possible to avoid downtime. The City fleet includes but is not limited to; DPW equipment, sanitation trucks, Transit Buses, City Fire, City Police, and City Utilities equipment.
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
- Maintain and repair City vehicles and equipment to remain in compliance with Local, State, and Federal Policies
- Ability to analyze, diagnose and repair equipment failures, and make significant repairs, i.e., engines, transmissions, hydraulics, electrical system, brake system, fuel systems, etc.
- Complete preventive maintenance and inspections on all City vehicles & equipment, i.e., oil change, lube, brakes, hoses, tires, tune-ups, etc.
- Check, fill and change appropriate fluids for all vehicles
- Change and repair tires on vehicles and equipment
- Dismantle and reassemble equipment and parts as necessary
- Diagnose and repair hydraulic issues
- Diagnose and repair electrical issues
- Complete brake jobs and inspections
- Ensure that all safety devices on vehicles are in good working order
- Ensure all emergency lighting is in good working order
- Make service calls on inoperable equipment
- Diagnose issues using scan tools or computerized testing equipment
- Fabricating skills
- Operate power tools and hand tools while maintaining, fabricating, and repairing equipment
- May perform welding, acetylene burning, brazing, soldering, Mig, Tig, and Stick welding
- As required, order parts for vehicles and equipment as needed
- Wash or clean vehicles and equipment to perform necessary repairs
- Keep work area and tools orderly and clean
- Perform routine housekeeping duties to provide a safe working environment
- Maintain accurate maintenance records electronically & hard copy
- Professional interaction with internal and external customers and ability to work in harmony with other employees and supervisors
- Perform other duties as required
- Assists other City mechanics in vehicle & equipment repair
- Attend educational sessions and monthly safety meetings
- Responsible for assuring that all equipment is operated in a safe and efficient manner
- Responsible for personal safe work practices and following department procedures at all times
- Works safely observing all OHSA, Federal, State, and City Regulations
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma, trade school, or equivalent desired
- Two (2) years minimum experience with diesel, medium-duty trucks/heavy equipment
- Knowledge of I.O.S.H.A. regulations
- Ability to read & write work order tickets
- Knowledge of and ability to drive heavy & light-duty trucks
REQUIREMENTS:
- Strong communication skills with internal and external customers
- Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills
- Innovative and ability to learn
- Knowledge of Cummins ISB, ISC, and ISL engines
- Ability to operate and repair medium / heavy-duty trucks and equipment
- Extensive knowledge of practices, procedures, materials, and tools used in automotive and heavy equipment repair, i.e., Mig welders, torches, pneumatic tools, scan tools, etc.
- Experience using diagrams and schematics necessary to troubleshoot or repair vehicle or component failure
- Ability to operate a computer, including competently entering data, research, ordering parts, communicating through email and other written documents
- Knowledge or ability to learn Cummins Insight and Cummins Quick Serve
- Provide own hand tools to perform job duties
- Work overtime, weekends, and or holidays as required
- Work in all environments, including indoor and outdoor work
- Knowledge of shop hazards and safety precautions
LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONS:
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record, able to drive and be insured as an employee while driving at all times
- Commercial Driver’s license Class B with air brakes required or within 180 days; maintain CDL at all times after acquisition
JUDGMENT:
- Judgment based on established policies and procedures. Frequently works independently. Independent judgment is required regarding repairs
- Demonstrate appropriate decision-making/problem-solving
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
- Receives general instructions from supervisor regarding extensive repairs or parts ordering
RELATIONSHIPS RESPONSIBILITY:
- Ability to deal tactfully and responsibly with various vendors and work in harmony with employees and supervisors
- Communicate with other City Departments to coordinate work.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Duties require considerable physical effort, bending, twisting, squatting, lifting heavy objects, working with hands, working in tight spots, working with arms in overhead position, work under vehicles from floor, continual work out-of-doors and in inclement weather
- Frequent exposure to dirt, dust, and other unsanitary conditions, loud noise
- Extended hours may be required
- On call after regular working hours
- Subject to work in all weather conditions
- Activity will involve being around moving equipment
REMARKS:
- Must be able to work overtime, holidays and weekends, and extended hours frequently required for emergencies and specific projects as required
NOTE:
This position requires a current physical, alcohol, and 5-panel drug test. The successful candidate will be in the pool for random drug testing.
This position is subject to the City’s Drug Alcohol-Free Workplace Program, including pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return-to-duty testing, and follow-up testing.
