This job opening is for one Equipment Mechanic I or II depending on business need and applicant's qualifications and experience. Qualification and experience will determine the applicant's position and pay. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on the applicant’s work experience, education, skill level and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.
Equipment Mechanic I – A16 | $44,400 - $61,130 yearly
Equipment Mechanic II – A18 | $45,521 - $71,055 yearly

Position Description
Performs repair/maintenance and inspection related work for fleet vehicles and equipment in the Fleet Operations Division Shop or a District Maintenance Section. Work may require maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in construction of highways/bridges and inspecting work performed by contracted vendors. Work may require contact with other governmental agencies and private contractors. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments, however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Essential Duties:
Equipment Mechanic I
-
Analyzes and interprets computerized diagnostic equipment information.
-
Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts to include air brake and anti-locking systems.
-
Handles and disposes of environmentally hazardous materials in accordance with federal and state laws.
-
Checks lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights and parking lights.

Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges
-
Orders, picks up and delivers parts, materials, tools, and operates equipment and vehicles to include heavy equipment.
-
Performs preventive maintenance, inspections and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; as required moves items related to these activities.

Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.
-
May travel and perform work in other shops throughout the state as required
-
Troubleshoots, tests and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions and fuel injection systems.

Uses computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and performs complex diagnostic work on vehicles/equipment.

Prepares vehicles for use by checking for required safety features such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and mobile
radios. -
Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Equipment Mechanic II: Includes all essential duties listed for Equipment Mechanic I as well as:

Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.

Performs acetylene and electric arc welding repairs.
-
Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into fleet information management system.

Performs emergency spot repairs.
Minimum Qualifications:
Experience:
Equipment Mechanic I: 2 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
Equipment Mechanic II: 4 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
(Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 year's experience.

Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.

Reading and interpreting equipment repair and parts contracts

Follow applicable safety standards, practices and procedures
Equipment Mechanic II: Includes all competencies listed for Equipment Mechanic I as well as:

State procurement guidelines for parts purchases and P-card use

Brake repairs to include anti-locking systems, mechanical brakes, air brakes and hydraulic brake systems

Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour

Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals

Subject to atmospheric conditions-fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation

Subject to air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids

Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs

Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling

Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist

Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.

Will be required to work alternate schedules during an emergency response situation such as adverse weather events.
