The Position

We appreciate your interest in the Sheriff's Cadet position. Under immediate supervision, the Sheriff’s Cadet is responsible for assisting both sworn and non-sworn Sheriff’s Office personnel and other County departments with site security operations, parking enforcement, administrative tasks, and patrol in a marked presence to discourage vandalism, theft, or other illegal activity on or around County facilities.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Sheriff’s Cadet is a non-sworn, beginning career ladder position for law enforcement serving in an apprentice, learning capacity while performing a variety of routine law enforcement support duties. The position is specifically designed as an introduction to various aspects of the law enforcement profession and to help prepare individuals for a future career as a sworn law enforcement officer. Incumbents in a regular, non-extra help position are placed in the Miscellaneous retirement category and are not covered by Government Code Sections 4850 and 3300 through 3311.

This recruitment is being conducted to fill one Extra Help. Extra Help assignments are non-benefited and may be used for on-call needs up to29 hours per week (up to1,000 hours per fiscal year). Extra help employees are not eligible for promotional opportunities open to regular part-time and full-time employees.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Experience and Education: Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

Experience: None required.

Education: Equivalent to completion of High School and current enrollment in an accredited 2-year or 4-year college or university as a full-time student (12 semester unit minimum) while maintaining a 2.0 GPA

License or Certificate*:

Possession of a valid California driver’s license
Possession of a certificate demonstrating satisfactory completion of a POST course on 832 (arrest and firearms training) within one (1) year of appointment.
Incumbents are required to obtain first aid and CPR certification within one (1) year of appointment.
Any license, certification, registration, or appointment required for this position shall be maintained (i.e., active and in good standing) at all times during employment with Napa County. For continued employment with Napa County, you must maintain such license, certification, or registration to meet the minimum qualifications of this position.

Special Requirements

Background Checks: The County may conduct a background check and a reference check on candidates prior to appointment to a position within this class. The background check may include the State of California Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Child Abuse Central Index (CACI), and criminal checks in any City/County where the applicant has lived, worked, or gone to school. Candidates will be required to pass an extensive background investigation, physical examination, and psychological evaluation in accordance with applicable law, regulation and/or policy.

Hours of Work: Incumbents may be required to work weekends, holidays, irregular hours, on-call, and after normal business hours.

Drug and Alcohol Testing: Incumbents and candidates applying for positions in this class may be subject to, depending on job assignment, drug and alcohol testing as required under the Federal Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991. Testing includes post-accident and pre-employment, as well as random and reasonable suspicion testing as required by law.

The most qualified candidates from the oral panel interview will be placed on the eligibility list and may be considered for current and future vacancies for this position for up to one year.

Salaries are based on a five-step range. Appointments are usually made at the beginning step with advances occurring at six months and the completion of each year thereafter. Salary rates are reviewed annually.
