Full Job Description

Southern Oncology Specialists is seeking a Medical Billing & Financial Counselor to join our Patient Financial Counselors team. This position combines medical billing responsibilities with patient financial counseling and plays an important role in helping patients understand their insurance benefits, financial responsibility, and available assistance options.

The ideal candidate has experience in medical billing, insurance verification, patient accounts, collections, or healthcare revenue cycle and is comfortable communicating with both insurance companies and patients regarding financial matters.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Review patient accounts and insurance coverage to determine patient financial responsibility.
Verify insurance benefits, eligibility, deductibles, coinsurance, copays, and out-of-pocket requirements.
Review insurance payments, adjustments, denials, and patient balances for accuracy.
Communicate with insurance companies regarding benefits, claims, reimbursement, and account issues.
Educate patients regarding their insurance benefits and estimated financial responsibility for treatment.
Discuss outstanding balances with patients and assist with collection of amounts due.
Identify patients who may qualify for manufacturer assistance, copay assistance, grants, foundations, or other financial assistance programs.
Assist patients with applications for available financial assistance programs and obtain required documentation.
Follow up on financial assistance applications and maintain accurate documentation of approvals, denials, and funding.
Coordinate with the billing, authorization, pharmacy, clinical, and front office teams when financial concerns could affect patient treatment.
Document all patient and payer communication accurately in the appropriate system.
Review accounts prior to treatment when necessary to identify potential financial or insurance concerns.
Maintain confidentiality of patient financial and health information in accordance with HIPAA and company policies.
Respond to patient billing questions professionally and compassionately.
Maintain accurate and timely follow-up on assigned accounts.
Perform additional medical billing and patient financial service duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Previous experience in medical billing, healthcare revenue cycle, patient accounts, insurance verification, or financial counseling preferred.
Oncology or specialty medical practice experience is a plus.
Knowledge of medical insurance terminology, including deductibles, copays, coinsurance, out-of-pocket maximums, EOBs, and insurance reimbursement.
Experience communicating with commercial insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, and other payers preferred.
Strong attention to detail and ability to work accurately with financial information.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Comfortable discussing sensitive financial matters with patients in a professional and compassionate manner.
Strong organizational and follow-up skills.
Ability to manage multiple accounts and priorities while meeting deadlines.
Ability to work collaboratively with billing, clinical, administrative, and front office teams.
Proficient computer skills and ability to learn electronic medical record and billing systems.

Experience in oncology is helpful but not required. Candidates with strong medical billing or healthcare revenue cycle experience are encouraged to apply.
