Full Job Description

Job Description: Respiratory Therapist

Schedule: FT or On Call

Position Summary

Under physician direction, the Respiratory Therapist provides comprehensive respiratory care, specialized for

the nursing facility environment. This includes setting up and operating various respiratory care equipment for

the diagnosis and therapeutic treatment of cardiopulmonary illnesses. The therapist also collaborates closely

with the nursing staff to ensure a coordinated and effective approach to patient care.

Qualifications

Professional:

● Current California Respiratory License

● Current Basic Life Support Certification

● Broad Knowledge of respiratory care principles, procedures and practice

● Previous clinical experience in the capacity of one of the following: Respiratory Therapy

● Previous experience caring for patients with technology dependency (Medi-Cal requirement)

● Knowledge of Title XXII guidelines and state operations for respiratory care.

● Strong communication skills.

discretion, patients, tact and diplomacy in interaction with employees, peers, and administrative

personnel.

● Ability to prioritize multiple assignments without sacrificing the quality of the end product

● Possesses good presentation skills so as to present outcomes/results/recommendations (positive and

negative) in a professional, useful and effective manner.

● Must be able to drive/travel, possess a current California Driver License and maintain current

comprehensive general automobile liability insurance with limits which are not less than those required

by law.

Major Tasks, Duties, And Responsibilities

● Explains to the resident, purpose and procedure of treatments, tests and equipment.

● Uses knowledge of growth and development principles to anticipate care needs of residents in the adult

and geriatric levels of care.

● Applies criteria for recognition of abuse and follows policy for making appropriate referral/intervention

● Conducts physician- prescribed treatments of a routine nature operating various oxygen devices,

nebulizer and ultrasonic nebulizer, in order to administer prescribed medicinal vapors and gasses,

humidity and various oxygen concentrations to the respiratory system of the resident.

● Performs chest wall manipulation treatments involving percussion/vibration, postural drainage, and

suctioning, in order to mobilize secretions and mucus in the lungs and to clear airway blockage in the

respiratory system.

● Performs set-up operation and monitoring of ventilator when resident’s respiratory system is incapable

of adequate spontaneous ventilation.

● Ensures the adequate maintenance of ventilation during cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.

● Records on respiratory care records and resident chart, all pertinent information of treatments, and

resident response to treatments

● Performs pulse oximetry analysis.

● Sets up oxygen.

● Assists residents with uncomplicated transfer in and out of bed.

● Reports to relief personnel, condition of residents and treatments to be administered/conducted

● Processes respiratory therapy equipment – cleaning as required

● Conducts regular rounds – checking residents’ oxygen equipment replacing humidifiers as necessary,

as well as spot- checking other respiratory therapy equipment on a timely basis

● Performs such other functions as are identified by the Manager/Lead Respiratory Therapist and/or

Director of Nursing, Administrator and Medical Director

Physical Capabilities:

The following frequency definitions record the appropriate symbol within the normal work day:

(F) Frequent – Activity exists 33 1/3% (e.g. 2 1⁄2 hours per 8-hour work day).

(N) Never – Activity does not exist as a regular requirement.

To complete the essential functions, the employee is required to:

STAND- (C) LIFT – (F) up to 40 lbs.

WALK- (C) CARRY- (F) UP TO 20 lbs.

TALK- (C) PUSH/PULL/GRASP- (F)

HEAR- (C) DRIVE VEHICLE- (F)

FEEL- (C) TURN/REPOSITION PATIENTS- (F) up to 40 lbs.

SEE- (C) visual acuity is required to observe details of instruments required for life support

Pay: $48.00 - $55.00 per hour
