Full Job Description

Occupational Category: 17-2051.00 Civil Engineers

The Engineer will assist the Chief Engineer with all aspects of Maintenance and Capital programs and projects of the Railroad Engineering department. The Engineer is tasked with all aspects of the physical plant of the railroad. Duties include interaction between engineering department employees as well as railroad operations supervisors. The Engineer will need general engineering knowledge of infrastructure to include railroad rail, bridges, and signal systems.

Primary Activity and Responsibilities

Serve in a technical role under the Chief Engineer.

Manage the structural maintenance and capital programs on track, bridges, and right-of way facilities.

Develop production planning schedule, cost estimate for project implementation and review design plans.

Inspect structures to determine the integrity of structures for both immediate and future programs.

Establish budgets and deadlines for railroad right-of-way projects.

Respond to emergencies and implement repairs.

Develop forecasting for long-term requirements, both capital and maintenance needs.

Required Skills/Abilities

Familiarity with job skills required for various crafts - Tie & Rail replacement, drainage structures, railroad signaling.

Ability to analyze bridge structures, such as bridge abutments and super structures, such as steel girders.

Knowledge of budget propagation and cost estimation.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office (i.e. Word, Excel, etc.), and or comparable PC applications.

Strong knowledge of CAD.

Strong oral and written communication skills.

Must be able to work both independently and in a team setting.

Must have a valid driver’s license.

Knowledge of NORAC rules is desirable but not required.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Required Education/Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management or related field.

Experience is beneficial.

Strong attention to detail with excellent analytical and judgment capabilities.

Ability to work independently, as well as in a team environment.

Job Requirements

Available to work in the geographic area of Western Connecticut and Western Massachusetts.

Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Work safely to prevent on the job accidents and injuries.

Wear protective equipment such as a hard hat, hearing protection, and safety-toe boots.

Work hours may include a nonstandard workweek, holiday, overtime, nights, and various shift work.

Complete periodic training and pass safety rules examinations.

Federal regulations require random testing for drugs and/or alcohol.
