Full Job Description

General Description:

The Connecticut Proton Therapy Center (CPTC) is excited to invite applications for the position of Proton RTT at our state-of-the-art facility in Wallingford, CT. The Proton RTT will serve as a part of the Radiation Therapy team in delivering proton treatments on the IBA ProteusONE. As a Proton RTT, you will work closely with the Radiation Oncologist, Dosimetrist, Physicist, and other healthcare professionals to ensure the highest standards of patient care.

The specialization in Proton Therapy for this position requires the Proton RTT maintain a higher level of training and attention to detail including but not limited to: understand and assess proton beam paths, evaluate intervening densities along beam paths, understand principles of range uncertainty and robustness, identify the need for quality assurance CTs, appreciate density changes that affect plan quality, communicate with Dosimetry/Physics/Physician staff in Proton Therapy terminology, perform duties with attention to room/treatment efficiency, navigate more complicated technical interlocks and downtime events, interface with patients regarding downtime/treatment issues, and assess Proton specific issues for appropriateness of delivery.

Additionally, the use of more precise patient positioning techniques requires a higher level of skill and diligence than typical for a more traditional radiation therapist due to the more precise nature of the beam. The Proton RTT will be expected to be more flexible in their work shifts as there is only one proton treatment room. If the system experiences downtime, the treatment day is commonly extended to ensure that all patients are treated.

Responsibilities:

Administer Proton Therapy treatments under the general supervision and prescription of the Radiation Oncologist, Medical Physicist, etc.
Demonstrate proper radiation safety techniques at all times.
Deliver more highly conformal, precise, and sophisticated Proton Therapy in a generally higher risk patient population.
Prepare and position patients for treatment, ensuring their comfort and safety.
Deliver radiation treatments with small tolerance to density/volume changes as well as organ shifts/motion requiring added diligence in set up and monitoring.
Utilize advanced medical imaging technologies, including CT scans to assist in treatment planning.
Assist in developing the treatment plan.
Accurately simulate patients for treatment.
Perform mold room functions such as fabrication of custom immobilization devices, bolus, bite blocks and shields.
Monitor patients during treatment and provide support as needed.
Assesses patient, peer and student education needs; provides instruction as needed.
Educate patients about the Proton Therapy treatment process and assist in addressing any concerns they may have.
Communicate frequently and compassionately with patients regarding changes in schedule, treatment related issues, etc.
Maintain patient treatment records, medical records, and other patient-related materials.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Work Experience Requirements:

Minimum of one (1) year of experience in Radiation Oncology
Proton Therapy experience preferred (pay scale higher for applicants with proton experience)

Required Skills and Abilities:

Strong knowledge/experience in clinical information and imaging systems
Strong attention to detail
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail.
Proven experience in medical care settings, specifically in Radiation Oncology or related fields
Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and medical care practices
Excellent communication

Education/Degree/Qualifications:

State of Connecticut radiation therapy license required
Certification as an RTT from an accredited radiation program required
ARRT registration and certification required
Bachelor’s degree preferred

Other:

Proton RTTs are expected to be flexible in their work shifts when the system experiences downtime and based on center volume.
Days may be extended due to downtime to ensure that all patients are treated if possible.
Planned weekend treatments may be required, especially around holidays or to make up missed treatments when there is downtime.
Rotating AM/PM shifts
When working PM shift, shift differential pay will be applied on top of hourly base pay
