Full Job Description

The Coding Specialist primary responsibility is ensuring the correct HCPCS and CPT code is assigned to describe the type of service a patient has received for services provided by City Ambulance. General duties include coding ground ambulance emergency or non-emergency transports at the correct level of service (ALS, BLS or SCT) and adding all billable charges on a claim to warrant reimbursement. As well as have a working knowledge of medical abbreviations, terminology and anatomy along with familiarity of ICD-10 codes and procedures. The employee will need to complete position responsibilities by following established guidelines and protocols within the appropriate time frame, and must be flexible with his/her work schedule. This position involves discretion and independent action within prescribed limits.

Responsibilities:

· Comply with all legal requirements regarding coding procedures and practices

· Obtain additional information and updates as needed to remain current on coding rules, guidelines and regulations

· Review each account thoroughly to ensure all documentation is accurate to for proper coding

· Ensure that all patient accounts are properly and completely documented using the department’s documentation requirements established by management

· Ensure that all accounts are worked timely and documentation is kept up to date

· Ensure productivity guidelines are met daily as set forth by management

· Manages assigned coding queues via Excel worklists

· Complies with all applicable policies and procedures to meet HIPAA and corporate standards

· Takes measures to protect Patient Health Information [PHI] and escalates potential risks

· Perform other duties as assigned by management

· Managing “Tags” within the practice management system per department and corporate guidelines

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

· High school diploma or GED required

· Minimum 2 years of experience in medical billing or coding

· Ability to read and interpret ePCR documentation for use of ICD-10 and CPT codes

· Excel intermediate experience

· Excellent communication skills with internal and external clients

· Excellent typing speed and accuracy

LANGUAGE/MATH/REASONING ABILITY

· Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and/or governmental regulations. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

· Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentages.

· Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

COMPUTER SKILLS

· Intermediate computer skills

· None required

· Coding certification preferred, if possible, prior to hire date
