Full Job Description

Job Summary:

The collection specialist is responsible for ensuring accurate billing, timely submission of electronic and/or paper claims, monitoring claim status, researching rejections and denials - including contacting the insurance companies regarding denials and issues from processing incorrectly, documenting related account activities, ensure posting adjustments and payments are correctly posted. The Government and Liability Specialist must possess critical thinking skills and understanding of government insurance payer payment methods and denial remark codes. In addition, the collection specialist must demonstrate proficiency with billing system to ensure all functionality is utilized for the utmost efficient processing of claims.

Responsibilities

The Government and Liability Insurance Collections Specialist is responsible for all activities related to the collection and resolution of outstanding patient accounts and insurance claims to ensure timely and accurate reimbursement.

Review and manage outstanding claims assigned within designated work queues.
Respond promptly and professionally to incoming mail, telephone calls, emails, faxes, and other correspondence related to claim resolution.
Ensure compliance with all payer-specific timely filing requirements, appeal deadlines, and reimbursement guidelines.
Perform comprehensive insurance follow-up activities on denied, underpaid, or unresolved claims.
Prepare and submit reconsiderations, appeals, and supporting documentation as required to secure appropriate reimbursement.
Research claim issues, identify billing and reimbursement trends, and document findings accurately.
Analyze payer behavior and recurring denial patterns and communicate findings and recommendations to management.
Contact government (VA, Tricare, etc.), liability, attorney, and MVA carriers via telephone, online portals, and written correspondence to obtain claim, authorization, and appeal status updates.
Maintain accurate and detailed account documentation in the billing system.
Work collaboratively with internal departments to resolve claim discrepancies and payment issues.
Meet established productivity, quality assurance, and performance standards.
Maintain compliance with HIPAA regulations and all company confidentiality policies.
Assist with special projects and perform additional collection-related duties as assigned by management.

Requirements

Minimum 3 years of Medical Accounts Receivable (AR) and Out-of-Network Insurance Collections experience required.
Experience working with Veterans Affairs (VA), TRICARE, Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA), and Attorney/Liability claims required.
Strong knowledge of Explanation of Benefits (EOBs), including interpretation of copayments, coinsurance, deductibles, and denial codes.
Working knowledge of insurance billing and collections processes, including insurance verification, claim follow-up, appeals, and payment resolution activities.
Ability to work independently, prioritize workload effectively, and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Strong attention to detail with excellent organizational and time-management skills.
Exceptional customer service skills with a professional and courteous demeanor.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated critical thinking, problem-solving, and proactive decision-making abilities.
Ability to collaborate effectively with team members while also performing independently with minimal supervision.
Maintain patient confidentiality and protect organizational operations by adhering to all HIPAA and privacy regulations.
Proficient in reviewing and resolving insurance claim denials, underpayments, and reimbursement discrepancies.
Ability to meet productivity, quality, and performance expectations while maintaining accuracy and compliance.
