The Fleet Maintenance Mechanic I performs skilled inspection, diagnosis, preventive maintenance, repair, and servicing of City vehicles and equipment. The incumbent performs work in compliance with established safety procedures, meeting or exceeding industry and manufacturer estimated work times. The Fleet Mechanic I is responsible for the regular maintenance and upkeep of City equipment.
REPORTING STRUCTURE
The Fleet Mechanic reports directly to the Fleet Mechanic Lead, and indirectly to the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor/CDL.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform routine preventive maintenance, including oil changes, lubrication, filter replacement, fluid services, cooling system service, and tire maintenance.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, ignition, steering, suspension, brake, and related vehicle and equipment systems.
- Inspect City vehicles and equipment to identify maintenance and repair needs.
- Enter, update, and maintain work orders, inspection notes, labor, parts usage, and equipment history in the Fleet Management System.
- Coordinate repairs, preventive maintenance scheduling, and work priorities with the Fleet Mechanic Lead and Fleet Mechanic II.
- Assist with inventory by receiving parts, maintaining stock levels, documenting inventory transactions, recommending reorder quantities, and ordering parts and materials as directed.
- Monitor deferred maintenance items and notify supervisors of recurring equipment issues or repair delays.
- Prepare vehicles and equipment for disposal by inspecting units and updating fleet records.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment and ensure tools and equipment remain in good working order.
- Operate forklifts, shop equipment, diagnostic equipment, computers, and City vehicles in the performance of assigned duties.
- Participate in required safety and technical training.
- C omplete other duties as assigned.
The knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to fulfill the essential duties are usually, although not always, acquired through the following:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and
- Two (2) years of experience in vehicle maintenance and repair work,
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
- Must be available to work nights, holidays, and weekends and respond to emergency calls as required.
- A valid Class D Driver's License is required for the duration of employment in the Fleet Mechanic position.
Must possess certification as a forklift operator within one (1) year of employment and maintain certification for the duration of employment in this position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Knowledge of preventive maintenance, vehicle and equipment repair methods, work scheduling, and maintenance planning.
- Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engines, mechanical and electrical vehicle systems, and standard repair procedures.
- Knowledge of shop safety practices, maintenance production methods, and standard labor times for repair tasks.
- Knowledge of inventory, recordkeeping, and computerized maintenance management systems.
- Knowledge of basic computer applications, including database, spreadsheet, and word processing software.
- Skill in operating computers, diagnostic equipment, air tools, welders, handheld scanners, and other shop equipment.
- Skill in safely operating automatic transmission vehicles.
- Ability to organize, prioritize, and complete multiple assignments efficiently and accurately.
- Ability to inspect, diagnose, and evaluate vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair needs.
- Ability to recommend effective repair methods and estimate repair time requirements.
- Ability to maintain accurate maintenance records and documentation.
- Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, vendors, and the public.
Ability to safely operate the tools, equipment, and technology necessary to maintain City vehicles and equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed primarily in a fleet maintenance shop and outdoors. Employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts, fuels, oils, grease, chemicals, noise, vibration, weather conditions, and other hazards associated with vehicle maintenance.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Regular standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, reaching, lifting up to 50 pounds regularly and heavier items with assistance or equipment, manual dexterity, and visual acuity required.
